Men’s Volleyball stays hot with sweep of Siena Heights

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles program best start continued with their fifth consecutive victory with a 3-0 sweep of WHAC foe Siena Heights on Tuesday evening. Cornerstone took the first two sets 25-20 and secured the final set 25-17 to move to 8-1, 3-1 WHAC on the year. The tough tests of the Golden Eagles are set to continue this weekend at (7) Indiana Tech on Friday and (RV) Lourdes on Saturday for two more WHAC contests.

Game Recap – Cornerstone – 3 Siena Heights – 0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-17)

Set One:
  • Andrew Galanes got things off to an energetic start with a solo block for the first point of the match.
  • The teams traded points, but Siena Heights would use an early timeout after some frustration, as Joshua Beaumont got an easy kill with no block set to make it 4-3 Golden Eagles.
  • Cornerstone Head Coach Alex Bahn would also take an early timeout after some miscommunication for an easy SHU service ace that tied the set at six.
  • The two teams would trade points for much of the set as it sat tied at 14. Brunno Peres, David Galanes, and Andrew Galanes helped generate a big CU run to pull away, with three consecutive kills as Cornerstone went on top 18-14.
  • A pair of David Galanes kills and Saint service errors would secure the Golden Eagles set one victory, 25-20.
Set Two:
  • Once again in set two neither team could get out to a lead larger than two points for much of the set.
  • SHU went on a 3-0 run to go up 10-9 in the back-and-forth set.
  • Just like set one, Cornerstone would pull away late. CU went on a 5-0 run with four kills, including two from setter Patrick Voloch, and a service ace from Andrew Galanes to lead 19-14.
  • The Saints would call a timeout after a Joshua Beaumont kill with Cornerstone leading 20-15.
  • Cornerstone would cruise to the finish line in set two on an Andrew Galanes kill to win 25-20 for the second consecutive set.
Set Three:
  • Cornerstone went on an early run in set three to take command. The Galanes brothers recorded a service ace and kill in a 4-0 run to go on top 7-3.
  • A Saints attack error allowed Cornerstone to double-up Siena Heights at 12-6.
  • Andrew Galanes continued to take over set three with two more kills to put the Golden Eagles on top 16-8.
  • After another SHU service error, the Saints would use their second timeout with Cornerstone on top 18-9.
  • Brunno Peres would get an outstanding out of system kill on the great cross court assist from Andrew Galanes as the Golden Eagles continued to pour it on, 20-10.
  • Siena Heights made a slight comeback but was unable to overcome the deficit with CU scoring match point on a service error to win 25-17.
