COCOA, Fla. – The Golden Eagles shook off a rough day yesterday by coming back today with two victories. Softball started their day off with a 1-0 victory over Calumet College of St. Joseph and ended their day with a 9-1 victory over Fort Lauderdale. The bats woke up in game two, but the pitchers were the story of the day as they gave up one-unearned between the two games.
Mikayla Meade did her thing throwing a shutout in game one and the duo of
McKenna Glide and
Alyssa Braam got to work in game two allowing an unearned run. Cornerstone will be back tomorrow for the final day in Florida as they face off against Saint Francis (Ill.) at 11:30 a.m. and Florida National at 2 p.m.
Game One Highlights – Cornerstone – 1 Calumet – 0
- Mikayla Meade got the start for the Golden Eagles and after giving up a leadoff single to start the game, set the next three batters down in order to get out of the first inning unscathed.
- Sydney Tilma got the first hit of the game for Cornerstone with a single up the middle. The Golden Eagles would strand the runner at second as Calumet would pitch out of the jam.
- Mikayla Meade has settled into a nice groove as she has not seen in any trouble for the first three innings of the game. Letting the defense do its job behind her.
- Mackenzie Nagelhout started off the top of the fifth inning with a blooper down the right field line right out of the reach of the diving fielder for a stand-up triple. Nagelhout would eventually score a few pitches later thanks to a wild pitch giving Cornerstone the first run and lead of the game.
- Mikayla Meade continued to dominate on the mound as she was not giving in to the Calumet hitters. Going three up, three down again in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- Cornerstone had something going in the top half of the sixth with a leadoff single by Sydney Carr, but Calumet would limit the damage stranding the runner at second.
- Just like all game, Mikayla Meade continued to limit the damage as she let the defense do the work for her as she got out of a sixth inning jam. She finished the seventh inning with an easy 1-2-3 inning for the complete game shutout and the Cornerstone 1-0 victory.
Game Two Highlights – Cornerstone – 9 Fort Lauderdale - 1
- Delaney Wilson led off the game with a sharp single up the middle to get things rolling. The Golden Eagles were not able to get her home as she got stranded on second. McKenna Glide got the start for Cornerstone and started the game off strong with a quick 1-2-3 inning.
- The Golden Eagles were cooking something up in the second inning as they had the bases loaded with two-outs. Delaney Wilson steps up to the box and delivers a clutch two out single to bring home two runners to give Cornerstone the first runs of the game. Morgan Jenkins would follow her with a two-run double to give Cornerstone a 4-0 lead after the top of the second.
- Fort Lauderdale would respond in the bottom half of the inning using a two-out rally and an error to get on the board to make it a 4-1 Cornerstone lead.
- After a Moriah Sprague leadoff double, Jolie Groeneveld would follow that with a single to make it first and third. Groeneveld would steal second as Sprague would come home on the errant throw by the Fort Lauderdale catcher. Groeneveld would come home on the sac fly by Abbey Brower to make it a 6-1 Cornerstone lead. McKenna Glide would shut down the bats of Fort Lauderdale with a quick 1-2-3 inning.
- Sydney Carr would get a one-out double and would later score on the single by Alyssa Braam. Moriah Sprague continued her successful day with an opposite field triple to score Braam to give Cornerstone the 8-1 lead. Sprague would later come home on the Jolie Groeneveld ground out to make it 9-1.
- Alyssa Braam would come in to relieve McKenna Glide and would work around a few hits in the bottom of the fourth and then would later strikeout the side to end the bottom of the fifth to give Cornerstone the 9-1 victory.
