Softball ends their Florida trip with two extra inning losses

COCOA, Fla. – Softball closed out their week down in Florida with two tough extra inning losses. Cornerstone lost their first game of the day to Saint Francis (Ind.) 5-4 in nine innings and then would later lose to Florida National 4-3, also in nine innings. Delaney Wilson had a great day at the plate, with five hits in seven at-bats. Cornerstone fought all day but couldn't get that extra hit or run to leave Florida on a good note. The Golden Eagles finish their week in Cocoa, Florida with a 4-8 record as they will now travel back home to the Midwest. Softball will play their next game at Olivet Nazarene as that will be a double-header starting at 4 p.m.

Game One Highlights – Saint Francis – 5 Cornerstone – 4 F/9
  • McKenna Glide got the start in game one against Saint Francis and got to work with a quick top of the first. Delaney Wilson would start the game for Cornerstone with a nice opposite field single to get the offense rolling. Wilson would later come home that inning thanks to a single by Alyssa Braam to give Cornerstone the 1-0 lead after one.
  • A perfect relay by Maddy Chatman to Bailey Anson to Sam Timmer nailed the runner at home to keep Saint Francis off the board after the top of the second.
  • Glide got into some trouble in the top of third as after the first two batters reached via walk, McCord for SFU came through with an RBI single that would score two runs to give Saint Francis the 2-1 lead. Another run would score later thanks to a double steal to make it a 3-1 game.
  • Moriah Sprague got a one-out single and would later score on a Delaney Wilson single that would make it a one-run game, 3-2 after the fourth inning.
  • Alyssa Braam settled in nicely after replacing Glide as she has quieted the bats of Saint Francis to give Cornerstone the chance to tie the game. Sydney Tilma led off the sixth with a walk and Jolie Groeneveld would run for her, stealing two bases to get into scoring position. Mackenzie Nagelhout would bring her home with an RBI groundout to make it 3-3 after the sixth inning.
  • Cornerstone had a chance to win it in the seventh inning but stranded the go ahead run at second base as they headed to extras.
  • Saint Francis would get the run home in the top of the eighth as it was now Cornerstone's turn to answer. After a sac bunt to get the tying run to third, Jolie Groeneveld tried a squeeze bunt, but would collide with the first basemen and be called out for interference as the tying run was forced to go back to third. Luckily, Mackenzie Nagelhout came through with a single to right field to bring in that tying run as the game headed into the ninth inning.
  • Saint Francis would bring in that lead runner again in the ninth inning as they took a 5-4 lead. Delaney Wilson would get a base hit to get the tying run to third as Cornerstone had runners on the corners with one-out. The Golden Eagles were not able to get those runners home as they would fall to Saint Francis 5-4 in nine innings.

Game Two Highlights – Florida National – 4 Cornerstone – 3 F/9
  • Mikayla Meade got the start in game two and Florida National came out swinging as they were leading 1-0 after the first three batters. They would tack on one more run later in the inning to go up 2-0 after the first.
  • It wasn't until the third inning before Cornerstone had something cooking. Sam Timmer led off the inning with a single through the left side and would immediately come home thanks to an RBI triple by Emma Tornes for her first collegiate hit and RBI. She would score as Delaney Wilson would get another hit to tie the game 2-2 after the top of the third.
  • Mikayla Meade has settled in nicely after a tough first inning as she has cruised through the next four innings as the game remains tied 2-2 after the fifth.
  • Cornerstone had a chance in the top of the seventh to take the lead, but after a pitching change for FNU, the Golden Eagles left runners in scoring position as Meade would work a quick bottom of the seventh to head into extra innings.
  • Cornerstone got the lead runner home quick and had something cooking on the bases as they had the bases loaded with two-outs. FNU was able to wiggle their way out of the jam to keep the game close as CU leads 3-2. FNU would answer quickly in the bottom of the eighth to send it to the ninth inning.
  • The Golden Eagles missed out on a golden opportunity to get the lead runner home as FNU would get the batter to fly out and nail the runner tagging up to score. The second batter of the inning for FNU would double and would bring the winning run home for a walk off victory, winning 4-3.
