GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles had a prime-time event to knock off the ninth ranked team in the nation in Lourdes this afternoon. Yet, Lourdes did just enough to sneak out of Grand Rapids with a heartbreaking five set victory over Cornerstone (25-21, 21-25, 25-23, 20-25, 11-15). It seemed like Cornerstone had this game as they were in control of most of the match before Lourdes took the final two sets, proving why they are one of the top dogs in the conference. The Golden Eagles now drop to 15-8, 7-7 in the WHAC for the season.
David Galanes finished up his good week with a 21-kill performance to lead the Golden Eagles while
Patrick Voloch chipped in 49 assists. Cornerstone will be back in action on the road at Lawrence Tech on Wednesday, March 15 starting at 7 p.m.
Game Highlights: Lourdes – 3 Cornerstone – 2 (25-21, 21-25, 25-23, 20-25, 11-15)
- First Set
- Cornerstone got off to a huge start in the first set, as they are leading 9-1 thanks to kills by Andrew Galanes and Hubert Sliwinski.
- It has continued to be all Cornerstone in this one as they are leading 17-7 thanks to a service ace by Brunno Peres and attacking errors by the Gray Wolves.
- Lourdes has gone on a 8-2 run to bring this set within four, 19-15 as the Gray Wolves are making a late comeback in this one.
- Cornerstone found a way to keep Lourdes out of it thanks to another service ace by Brunno Peres and set winning kill by David Galanes to take it 25-21.
- Second Set
- It was a closer start in the second set for both teams as they have been battling back-and-forth as it is tied 6-6.
- The Golden Eagles have used a 5-2 run to take a 11-8 lead thanks to a service ace by Kyi Jagorin and a kill by Hubert Sliwinski.
- Lourdes then used a 7-1 run to take the lead 15-12 as their attackers can't be stopped.
- Cornerstone comes back late in the set to tie it 16-16 thanks to a kill by Brunno Peres.
- Lourdes would find a way to get out of the second set with a victory as they out score the Golden Eagles 9-5 to close out the set, winning 25-21.
- Third Set
- Cornerstone got off to a nice 5-1 lead early in the third set thanks to a kill by Hubert Sliwinski and a service ace by David Galanes.
- Lourdes has battled back in this one to keep the game close as Cornerstone still holds the lead 10-8.
- The Golden Eagles used a 5-0 run to take a 15-9 lead that forced Lourdes to use a timeout as Patrick Voloch had a service ace.
- Cornerstone would continue to hold the lead as a self-inflicted wound by the Gray Wolves gives Cornerstone the set victory 25-23.
- Fourth Set
- It was a game of runs to start the fourth set as Lourdes found themselves having the longer one that gave them the 9-6 lead early in the set.
- Cornerstone then would use another run of their own to tie it 9-9, before Lourdes took over again and extend their lead 13-9 as Cornerstone had to use one of their timeouts.
- A kill by Andrew Galanes got the Golden Eagles with three, late in the fourth set 19-16 but Lourdes always had an answer to the Golden Eagle attacks.
- The Gray Wolves would finish the fourth set strong, winning 25-20 to force a fifth set.
- Fifth Set
- Lourdes jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead in the fifth taking advantage of the Cornerstone errors.
- Cornerstone would respond with a 5-2 run of their own to tie it 7-7 halfway through the set thanks to a kill by David Galanes, a block by Brunno Peres and Joshua Beaumont.
- Lourdes when then go on a 4-1 run that saw them inch one step closer to escaping Grand Rapids with a victory.
- The Gray Wolves did just enough to win with a 15-11 match victory and a 3-2 win over the Golden Eagles.
