Men’s Volleyball falls on the Road to nationally ranked Saint Xavier

CHICAGO, Ill.  –The Golden Eagles, after a tiring defeat against Lawrence Tech, are unable to bounce back against (11) Saint Xavier in Chicago, Ill. Cornerstone seemed to find heart late in the match during the third set, but unfortunately couldn't turn the game around as they ultimately lost the away match in straight sets, 25-15, 25-16, 25-20. They will continue their away weekend at Trinity Christian College on Saturday, March 18 at 12 p.m.
 
Game Recap – Cornerstone – 0 Saint Xavier – 3 (15-25, 16-25, 20-25)

Set One
  • Cornerstone was off to a confident start, winning the first two points of the game on a Saint Xavier service error and a kill from junior outside hitter David Galanes, 2-0
  • The Cougars of Saint Xavier went on a 4-0 run which gave them a comfortable lead of 7-3.
  • Patrick Voloch dumps the ball over the net to keep Cornerstone within reach of the Cougars, 13-7.
  • Freshman Landon Waltz recorded two kills in a row, assisted by Patrick Voloch and Andrew Galanes, to bring the Golden Eagles closer in the first set. 19-11.
  • Cornerstone was unable to gain enough momentum in the first set. Saint Xavier takes it 25-15. 
Set Two
  • A beautiful kill from Andrew Galanes keeps the second set close early on. The Cougars lead 3-2.
  • An attack error and another kill for David Galanes ties the second set 6-6.
  • Saint Xavier went on their second run of the game, scoring four straight and gaining a decisive lead over the Golden Eagles 11-7.
  • Landon Waltz keeps the kills coming from his end, putting Cornerstone into double digits. 14-10.
  • Three attack errors by Saint Xavier gave Cornerstone hope, as they narrowed the gap 15-13.
  • Unfortunately for Cornerstone, the Cougars grabbed a 7-0 run late in the second set. They led the set 23-14.
  • A service error from the Golden Eagles saw the second set come to a close. The Cougars won 25-16.
Set Three
  • Two errors by Saint Xavier gave Cornerstone an encouraging start in the third set, 2-1.
  • The Cougars went on a 4-0 run early on, which saw them to a 5-2 lead.
  • Cornerstone grabbed their own 3-0 run in the third set and retake the lead 7-6.
  • The Golden Eagles went back and forth with the Cougars and kept their lead 10-9.
  • Saint Xavier bounced back into their groove and recorded another 3-0 run to get back in the set, 12-10.
  • Both teams traded on and off for points, which ended in yet another 3-0 run. Saint Xavier led 20-16.
  • David Galanes, assisted by Patrick Voloch, ended that run with a kill of his own, 20-17.
  • As the Cougars reached game point 24-18, two errors kept Cornerstone in the match.
  • The night ended in straight sets as the Saint Xavier Cougars won the third and final set 25-20.
 
By the Numbers 
10 – Andrew Galanes ties for the most kills with two Saint Xaviers players at 10 total kills. Andrew had 18 total attempts, giving him a .333 hitting percentage on the night.
19 – Patrick Voloch led his team in attack assists. Totally 19 in three sets.
.600 – Saint Xavier's Drew Ehlers lead both sides in attacking percentage at .600. He had a total of 15 attempts, 10 of those resulting in kills. 
 
What's Next? 
Cornerstone will be looking take this loss and build for another on-the-road match versus Trinity Christian College, March 18, starting at 12 p.m.
