Early season struggles continue as Baseball drops split DH with Ave Maria and Grand View

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Golden Eagles went to a new ballpark still in search of their first win, but they fell behind in both games resulting in two more losses. Cornerstone started the day falling 9-5 to Ave Maria after trailing 9-0. They then fell to Grand View, 10-4 after getting behind 5-0. Cornerstone is now 0-6 on the year. CU will be right back in action at Lake Myrtle Sports Park tomorrow bright and early as they have a 9 a.m. double-header with Ave Maria.

Game One – Ave Maria – 9 Cornerstone - 5
  • True freshman Christian Burgess took the mound for a tough task in starting the nine-inning game with Ave Maria. He pounded the zone early earning a strikeout against his first batter.
  • The middle of the Gyrene lineup got to Christian Burgess however as David Leonardi hit a two-run shot later in the first inning to go up 2-0. Later in the inning Ave Maria added a third run on a bloop single to take a 3-0 lead.
  • Ave Maria scored another run on an RBI single in the second that would end Christian Burgess day on the mound.
  • Brendan Miller took over in the second inning. He struggled to throw strikes and Ave Maria took advantage, scoring four more to increase their lead to 8-0.
  • Brendan Miller bounced back nicely on the mound in the third stranding a runner at third to keep the deficit at eight.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Ave Maria found another run with a two out RBI single on Brendan Miller to increase their lead to 9-0.
  • Matthew Kindley recorded his third hit of the day in the top of the seventh with a double to make him 3-3. Grant Young would later cash in with a two out two RBI double to put CU on the board and make it 9-2.
  • Ave Maria would go to the bullpen for the first time in the eighth as the starter Cameron Horner's brother Christian Horner came in relief leading 9-2.
  • Cornerstone continued to chip away in the top of the eighth as a walk from Jordan Wenzel eventually came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 9-3.
  • CU was able to get a pair of walks followed by a pair of singles from Grant Young and Jake Collins in the ninth to make things interesting and bring the score to 9-5 with no outs.
  • Ave Maria's Chris Cuppini started to find the zone and was able to get out of the inning to give the Gyrenes the 9-5 victory. L

Game Two – Grand View – 10 Cornerstone - 4
  • Looking to change the energy in his first start as a Golden Eagle, Lucas Vega stepped on the mound and took down Grand View 1-2-3 to open the game with two ground outs and a strikeout.
  • In the top of the third, Lucas Vega lost a little command and walked the first two batters. Grand View would load the bases with a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt. The Vikings got their first hit on a Camden Armstrong single that scored two and gave GV the 2-0 lead.
  • Later in the top of the third, Erik Broekemeier hit a bloop two RBI single that would advance the lead to 4-0.
  • A groundout scored one more as Grand View led 5-0 entering the bottom of the third inning.
  • JC Salinas got the Golden Eagles their first hit of the game in the bottom of the third to put runners on first and second. CU still could not break through though stranding the pair as the score stayed 5-0.
  • Ben Barnes took over on the hill for the top of the fourth. He was able to pitch a scoreless inning to keep CU within five.
  • Cornerstone scratched a run across in the bottom of the fifth. Jordan Wenzel walked and then used his speed to get into scoring position. Grant Young then hit a grounder to score him and make it 5-1.
  • Trying to continue to chip away in the sixth, Landon Poll scored on an error after singling earlier in the inning. CU was only able to get the one run though as they trailed 5-2 entering the final inning.
  • Grand View responded right back in the top of the seventh getting the run back on a bases loaded RBI single that made it 6-2.
  • Ben Barnes ran out of gas and was forced to exit the game after a bases loaded walk brought the Grand View lead back to five. Ryan McArthur checked in looking to get the final three outs of the seventh. Grand View added four more runs for fie in the inning to lead 10-2.
  • Cornerstone would fall in the second game of the day, 10-4 despite the fourth HR of the season from George Cutler in the bottom of the seventh.
