GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Baseball started off conference play in a little bit of weird situation. They were the away team in their own stadium as Aquinas hosted the Golden Eagles as they split a pair of games. Cornerstone won the first game 8-2 as Aquinas won the second game 9-8 as the Golden Eagle ninth inning rally came just short. Cornerstone has a no break as they are right back in action tomorrow in a makeup double-header against Cleary starting at 1 p.m.
Game One Highlights – Cornerstone – 8 Aquinas – 2
- Grant Young got the start today for the Golden Eagles and settled in nicely with two quick innings striking out a pair.
- Young started the inning off with a walk and after a pick off error, the runner advanced to third. He would eventually score on a bunt single that would give Aquinas the first run of game, leading 1-0.
- Cornerstone has struggled to get anything going at the dish as they are still scoreless through four innings of play.
- The Golden Eagles got the bats going in the fifth inning as Jordan Wenzel tied the game with a double down the left-field line. Two more Cornerstone runners would score on an error by the center fielder giving Cornerstone their first lead of the game 3-1. Grant Young would get out of jam to keep Cornerstone in the lead after the fifth inning.
- Cornerstone kept their bats going, tacking on two more runs thanks to a Daniel Freeman double. JC Salinas would then cap off the inning with a two-run triple to give Cornerstone a 7-1 after the top of the sixth inning.
- Lucas Vega would tack on another run for the Golden Eagles with an RBI single as Aquinas would score one in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Cornerstone won the first game 8-2.
Game Two Highlights – Aquinas – 9 Cornerstone – 8
- Aquinas struck first in game two just like they did in the first game as a double brought home the first run of the game as the Saints were winning 1-0 after the first inning.
- Landon Poll led off the second inning with a double and would come home thanks to an error by the center fielder as Cornerstone would tie the game 1-1 after the top of the second.
- Aquinas took control of the game as with two-outs in the bottom of third, the Saints hit a three-run homerun to take a 4-1 lead.
- Aquinas had the first three batters reach base to start the bottom of the fourth as it looked like a trouble inning for the Golden Eagles. Cornerstone got the first out of the inning, but a run was scored on sac fly. The next two hitters brough two more runners home as Aquinas extended their lead 7-1 after the fourth inning.
- Cornerstone has continued to struggle from the plate as they have gone done quiet since the second inning.
- After a few unforced errors by the Golden Eagles, Aquinas would scratch home a run before an out was record in the bottom of the sixth. Aquinas would then use a small two-out rally and another error by Cornerstone would score another Aquinas run to make it a 9-1 Saints lead.
- The first three Golden Eagles reached in the top of the seventh inning as Cornerstone had something cooking. Cornerstone would score three runs thanks to a hit-by-pitch, a walk, and a sacrifice fly to make it a 9-4 game after the top of the seventh.
- Cornerstone pitching has quieted the Saints bats heading into the ninth inning. A hit-by-pitch and a walk got the top of the ninth started as Jake Collins steps up the plate and blasts a three-run homerun to make it a game, as Aquinas now leads 9-7. George Cutler would follow that up with a solo homerun giving Cornerstone back-to-back homeruns as it is now 9-8. After Aquinas hit another Cornerstone batter, they would retire the next two batters to escape Cornerstone with a 9-8 victory.
