Men’s Volleyball holds off Siena Heights in a five-set match of runs

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Golden Eagles played as much volleyball as they could for the eighth time this season and found themselves on the winning end of a back-and-forth battle with a 19-25, 25-13, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13 victory over Siena Heights Cornerstone earns the series sweep of the Saints behind some heavy runs on Tuesday evening, and moves to 17-10, 8-8 WHAC on the year as they head home for the final three games of the regular season this weekend. 
 
Game Recap – Cornerstone – 3 Siena Heights – 2 (19-25, 25-13, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13)
 
Set One:
  • After an early set one lead highlighted by a Patrick Voloch service ace, Cornerstone would be subject to a huge Saints run. Siena Heights scored seven straight points two kills from Rasi Bailey to go on top 11-5. 
  • An SHU block moved their lead to 15-8. 
  • A Brunno Peres kill helped cap off three straight points for CU in attempt to comeback, making it 21-16.
  • Cornerstone could not complete a comeback taking a 25-19 set one victory. 
Set Two:
  • Siena Heights would again take an early lead in set two with a block from Bernard Bell and Zak Tucker that had them on top 13-11. 
  • Cornerstone made a change to the lineup and the change sparked a massive run of 14 consecutive points to take set two 25-13 on the Kyi Jagorin serve. Jagorin had three service aces, Landon Waltz added three kills, and David Galanes had the deciding kill to close out the dominant set.  
Set Three:
  • Cornerstone carried momentum into the third set and battled back and forth with the Saints. Andrew Galanes recorded a kill to help CU hold a small lead of 14-12.
  • A 3-1 run from CU that saw kills from Landon Waltz, Brunno Peres, and Joshua Beaumont increased the Golden Eagle advantage to 17-14. 
  • Landon Waltz continued to be a big factor in the Cornerstone resurgence with two more kills that made it 22-17. 
  • Brunno Peres recorded the final kill to secure set three 25-19. 
Set Four: 
  • Siena Heights did not want to be done yet as an early 7-0 run put them on top 11-5.
  • A kill from Brunno Peres cut the deficit to three at 12-9. 
  • SHU responded with another big run of five straight points that saw back-to-back blocks to go on top 17-9. 
  • Trailing by as many as nine late, Cornerstone responded with a 6-0 run of their own to try to steal the set. Five of the six points came on Saints errors. 
  • Marc Arsenault recorded the final kill for Siena Heights to secure set four 25-21 and force a fifth set. 
Set Five: 
  • Siena Heights took the first three points of set five on two CU errors and a kill from Marc Arsenault. 
  • Two kills from Andrew Galanes helped tie the set at six. 
  • Rasi Bailey recorded a kill for SHU that put them back in command at 10-8. 
  • Cornerstone took their first lead of the set at 12-11 with a 3-0 run that saw a block from David Galanes and Joshua Beaumont
  • Siena Heights battled back to tie things at 13 on a kill from Jakob Pickett.
  • David Galanes recorded a kill and Patrick Voloch a service ace to earn match point and take set five, 15-13.
 
By the Numbers 
8 – Cornerstone played their eighth five set match of the season tonight. 
14-0 – CU went on their longest run of the year with 14 straight points against Siena Heights in set two. 
10 – Cornerstone had 10 service aces on the day with four from Kyi Jagorin to lead the way. 
23 – Kyi Jagorin added 23 digs in the match for a new career high. 
51 – The two teams combined for 51 attack errors. 
 
What's Next? 
Cornerstone returns home this weekend for the final three games of the regular season. Action begins with Senior Day vs. Mount Vernon Nazarene on Friday starting just before 7 p.m.
