GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles played yet another five-set match as the two sides traded momentum in a crucial WHAC match near the end of the season with CU falling in five sets, 25-17, 22-25, 25-20, 10-25, 12-15. Cornerstone has now played three consecutive five-set matches and gone 2-1 in those contests to move to 17-11, 8-9 WHAC on the year. CU is not done yet with MVNU as they will host them at 11 a.m. tomorrow as well as Olivet Nazarene at 4 p.m. to end the regular season.
Game Recap – (RV) Mount Vernon Nazarene – 3 Cornerstone – 2 (17-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-10, 12-15)
Set One:
- Cornerstone rode the Senior Day momentum early in set one, going on a 9-0 run to take a 15-6 lead. Andrew Galanes recorded three service aces in the run to go along with six kills, three of which were by Landon Waltz.
- The serve domination continued later in the set with Cade Meza recording one to increase the advantage to 18-9.
- After CU got set point, Mount Vernon would score three straight to cut the deficit to 24-17.
- Patrick Voloch recorded a dump kill to win set one, 25-17.
Set Two:
- Mount Vernon woke up to start set two as Landon Ewers recorded a service ace to put the Cougars on top 5-1.
- Landon Waltz continued to be a force on the offensive end with a pair of kills to tie things back up at 5-5.
- The Galanes brothers helped spur a 3-0 run to put Cornerstone on top 13-10.
- The Golden Eagle lead increased to four on another MVNU service error, 20-16.
- MVNU battled back for a 5-0 run capped off by a big block from Riley Barretto and Luke Funte to take a 22-21 advantage.
- The Cougars would not look back as a pair of Golden Eagle attack errors helped them steal set two, 25-22.
Set Three:
- A frustrated Golden Eagle team responded with a strong start to set three. David Galanes recorded a kill to put them on top 4-1.
- The lead increased to 14-9 on a kill from Andrew Galanes.
- MVNU would get it back to within two at 15-13 on a Cornerstone attack error.
- A huge 3-0 run late that saw a David Galanes service ace and a Landon Waltz kill gave CU set point at 24-18.
- A ball handling error by the Cougars eventually ended set three in favor of the Golden Eagles, 25-20.
Set Four:
- Set four was all Mount Vernon as they dominated the service line and took an early 10-2 lead on the Jaysen Matsumoto serve.
- Spencer Stanley added a service ace to increase the Cougar lead to 15-3.
- Cornerstone had no answer as they fell 25-10 in the fourth set forcing yet another five-set match.
Set Five:
- Cornerstone scored the first two points of the high energy fifth set on a David Galanes kill and massive Andrew Galanes solo block.
- After trading points, David Galanes added another kill that gave Cornerstone a 7-5 lead and forced the first MVNU timeout.
- After the timeout, MVNU immediately tied the set back up at seven with a pair of kills.
- Patrick Voloch and David Galanes again recorded a pair of kills to make it 9-7 in favor of CU.
- As action continued to go back and forth, the Cougars scored three straight to regain the lead and force a Cornerstone timeout at 10-9.
- Timeouts continued to be effective for both sides as CU added two points of their own after their timeout to go back on top 11-10 and force MVNU to use their last one.
- Leading 12-11 and in command, Mount Vernon scored the final four points of the fifth ending things on a solo block to take set five 15-12 and survive in the tough Mol Arena environment.

Patrick Voloch recorded 46 assists tonight putting him 20 away from 2,000 in his career.
25 –
Kyi Jagorin again improved on his career best dig mark with 25 in tonight's match.
24 –
David Galanes recorded a career second best 24 kills in the match and now has a team high 362 on the year.

Cornerstone ends the regular season with a tri-match tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. vs. (RV) Mount Vernon Nazarene again.
