Men's Volleyball wraps up their regular season splitting a pair of games against MVNU and ONU

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Men's Volleyball wrapped up the regular season on a high note winning their last game of the season in four sets against (RV) Olivet Nazarene. The Golden Eagles did lose in an eerily similar fashion as last night's loss to (RV) Mount Vernon in five sets again. Patrick Voloch found himself with another milestone as he reached 2000 assists for his career, early in the first game against Mount Vernon. David Galanes totaled 37 total kills between the two games to lead the Golden Eagles. Cornerstone will now await who they play in the first round of the WHAC Tournament on Wednesday, March 29.
 
Game One Recap: Mount Vernon – 3 Cornerstone – 2 (25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 20-25, 12-15)
  • Set One
    • It was a back-and-forth start to the first set as David Galanes puts one down to give Cornerstone the 3-2 lead.
    • Cornerstone has continued to put the pressure on the Cougars as they have used a 6-0 run to make it 9-2. Max Hernandez and Landon Waltz had kills for the Golden Eagles as David Galanes chipped in with a service ace.
    • Cornerstone has continued to push their lead as they are winning 15-7 after a kill by Landon Waltz and Joshua Beaumont.
    • It has been all Golden Eagles in the first set as they are winning 20-13 thanks to another kill by Landon Waltz.
    • Mount Vernon had some late life, going on a 5-0 run to force Cornerstone to use a timeout as they are just one point away from the set one victory, 24-21.
    • David Galanes would get the finishing kill off the pass from Patrick Voloch to take set one 25-21.
  • Set Two
    • A big block by Joshua Beaumont and Landon Waltz gives Cornerstone the early 4-2 lead in set two.
    • Mount Vernon as battled back to take the 8-7 lead after a service ace just found a way to sneak itself inside the lines.
    • On a kill by Ethan Walker, Patrick Voloch recorded his 2000th assist as a Golden Eagle as the kill ties the game 9-9.
    • A big solo block by Landon Waltz sparked a 4-0 Cornerstone run that forced Mount Vernon to use one of their timeouts as Cornerstone took a 16-13 lead.
    • Mount Vernon has struggled hitting as multiple errors has given Cornerstone the advantage over the Cougars as they lead 21-17 late in the second set.
    • The Cougars used a timely 4-1 run to force Cornerstone into using their first timeout as the end of the second set has turned into a nailbiter.
    • Mount Vernon continued to use their momentum as they edged out Cornerstone 25-23 in the second set after a service ace and a block.
  • Set Three
    • A 3-0 Mount Vernon run sees them take a 6-5 lead thanks to a service ace.
    • Cornerstone used a 3-0 run of their own to force Mount Vernon to use their first timeout as they took a 10-8 lead thanks to a kill by Brunno Peres.
    • The Golden Eagles used a 5-2 run that forced Mount Vernon to use their final timeout as David Galanes and Max Hernandez had kills for Cornerstone making it 15-10.
    • A pancake by Kyi Jagorin leads to a kill by Max Hernandez, is then followed up by a service ace by David Galanes giving Cornerstone a 18-13 lead.
    • Mount Vernon has put the pressure on the Golden Eagles as they have made it a one-point game, 24-23 late in the third set. David Galanes would put the finishing touches on the set as Cornerstone wins 25-23.
  • Set Four
    • Mount Vernon got off to a hot start in the fourth set taking advantage of the Cornerstone errors to go up 4-1.
    • Cornerstone has taken the momentum from Mount Vernon using a 7-2 run to take an 8-6 lead thanks to kills by Landon Waltz and some attacking errors by the Cougars.
    • Jackson Bush forces Mount Vernon to use one of their timeouts after his service ace gives Cornerstone the 12-9 lead.
    • Mount Vernon has fought right back into this game tying it 15-15 as they are starting to click on all cylinders in this set.
    • The Cougars continue to extend their lead as Cornerstone used their final timeout as the Golden Eagles find themselves down 21-17.
    • Mount Vernon forces a fifth set for the second straight day as the Cougars win set four 25-20.
  • Set Five
    • It was a good start to the fifth set as David Galanes ties the game 2-2 with a kill.
    • Andrew Galanes comes in and makes a difference with a block and a kill that forces Mount Vernon to use a timeout as Cornerstone leads 5-3.
    • Joshua Beaumont gets three straight blocks with Andrew Galanes, Patrick Voloch, and Landon Waltz to give Cornerstone the 8-5 lead. Giving the Golden Eagles the momentum.
    • Mount Vernon came out of the timeout strong as they used a 4-0 run to take a 9-8 lead forcing Cornerstone to use one of their own timeouts.
    • Mount Vernon continues to put the pressure on the Golden Eagles as they lead 13-11 late in the fifth.
    • The Cougars escape with another five-set victory over Cornerstone as they win the final set 15-12.
 
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 3 Olivet Nazarene – 1 (20-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-20)
  • Set One
    • A service ace by Patrick Voloch ties the game 2-2 early in set one.
    • Four straight errors by the Golden Eagles have given Olivet Nazarene an 8-4 advantage.
    • Kills by David Galanes and Andrew Galanes has chipped into the ONU lead as they are down 15-11 halfway through the first set.
    • The Tigers are starting to pull away after some impressive defensive saves have led to points for Olivet Naz as they extend their lead 18-12.
    • Cornerstone continues to chip away at the ONU lead taking advantage of the Tiger's errors as David Galanes gets another kill, 20-17.
    • Olivet Nazarene would finish off the first set strong winning 25-20.
  • Set Two
    • Patrick Voloch started off the set with a service ace to give Cornerstone an early 2-0 lead.
    • Back-to-back kills by Andrew Galanes and a kill by Brunno Peres gives Cornerstone an early 6-3 lead in set two.
    • Cornerstone has continued to put the pressure on the Tigers as they have extended their lead 10-5 thanks to a kill by Joshua Beaumont.
    • ONU used a little run to chip into Cornerstones lead but a David Galanes kill forces the Tigers to use another one of their timeouts as the Golden Eagles lead 15-11.
    • It has continued to be all Cornerstone in the second set as Kyi Jagorin added a service ace with Brunno Peres following that up with a kill to help give the Golden Eagles a 20-13 lead.
    • ONU has used a 7-3 run to make it a 23-20 Cornerstone lead late in the second set.
    • Cornerstone used two kills by Andrew Galanes to finish off the second set as they won 25-21.
  • Set Three
    • ONU has gotten off to a quick start, going up 4-2 on the Golden Eagles.
    • A service ace by Cade Meza ties the set 7-7 as Cornerstone got a kill from David Galanes.
    • The Golden Eagles are right in it with the Tigers as Cornerstone has taken a 13-11 lead thanks to a kill by Hubert Sliwinski.
    • Cornerstone has continued to put the pressure on the Tigers are they are up 20-16 late in the third set.
    • The Golden Eagles would take advantage of the ONU errors and 50/50 calls as David Galanes would put the finishing touch on the third set, winning 25-17.
  • Set Four
    • Back-to-back kills by Andrew Galanes has tied the set 4-4 early in the fourth.
    • After ONU used a 4-0 run to get up 8-4, Cornerstone used a 4-0 run of their own to tie the set back up 8-8 thanks to attack errors by the Tigers.
    • A David Galanes service ace has put an exclamation point on a 6-3 run to give Cornerstone a 14-11 lead halfway through the fourth set.
    • The Golden Eagles continue to keep their lead thanks to a big solo block by Joshua Beaumont and a kill by Andrew Galanes, making it 19-14 Cornerstone.
    • Back-to-back service aces by Cade Meza had Cornerstone knocking on the door for a four-set victory over ONU as they lead 23-15.
    • Cornerstone finished off the fourth set thanks to two kills by David Galanes to win 25-20.

Cornerstone has made their first ever WHAC Tournament and will play on Wednesday, March 29 as they are awaiting to see who their opponent is.
