Baseball unable to find the win column in two offensive double-header at UNOH

LIMA, Ohio – 67 total runs crossed home plate in a four-game set at Northwestern Ohio, but the Golden Eagles could not find enough to get a win as they dropped two more today in an 11-9 and 13-6 loss to the Racers. CU drops to 10-16, 3-5 WHAC on the year as they battled tough weather all day long. Cornerstone now has a week off before returning home to take on Siena Heights for their next four game set on Friday and Saturday.

Game One – UNOH – 11 Cornerstone – 9
  • In a busy week, CU got back to the top of the pitching rotation on Saturday, seeing Grant Young start game one. An early error and a walk in the bottom of the first put two UNOH runners on with two outs. Young was able to get out of it though with a foul out to first base, keeping the game scoreless.
  • The Cornerstone bats got going in the second inning, as Lucas Vega recorded an infied single for the first hit of the game after a Landon Poll walk. CU then did their damange with two outs as Evan Shirley and Andrew Meny recorded back-to-back RBI singles. JC Salinas then walked before Jake Collins added a third single to score two more that gave Cornerstone a 4-0 lead.
  • The Racers got a run back in the bottom of the second inning after two Golden Eagle errors, as a run scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.
  • Cornerstone jumped right back into the offense in the top of the third inning, scoring three more runs on a Jordan Wenzel RBI double and an Evan Shirley two RBI single to center field. CU led 7-1 going into the bottom of the third.
  • Northwestern Ohio looked to mount a comeback again continuing to find some offense of their own off Grant Young. Young lost a little bit of his command with a walk and a wild pitch that scored another UNOH run after a double earlier in the inning making it 7-2. An RBI single from Hull later in the inning chipped into the deficit even more at 7-3.
  • Later in the inning, Velasco was able to clear the bases loaded with a two out double to left center field and bring the Racers within one.
  • The game would then be put in a rain delay just four pitches into the top of the fourth inning.
  • Action picked up at 2:20 p.m. as the rain lightened and both teams tried to fight through the weather conditions. JC Salinas picked up his at-bat with a 2-2 count from where it left off before the delay.
  • After CU went scoreless in their at-bat, Grant Young returned to the mound after the delay. He ran into early trouble as UNOH recorded three straight hits against him to tie the game at seven. Northwestern Ohio took the lead on a sacrifice fly later in the inning from Freeman to score Otero and make it 8-7. UNOH added one more run before Young got out of the inning with two quick outs.
  • The runs continued to come as two runners got on early in the inning. They later scored on a Jordan Wenzel single and a JC Salinas single to tie the game at nine. CU was unable to add anymore as they went to the bottom of the inning all tied.
  • Ryan McArthur came in and pitched the bottom of the fifth for Cornerstone. He would have no better luck allowing more UNOH base runners. The Racers took advantage of the early runners with a two RBI single to regain the lead once again, 11-9.
  • Ryan McArthur fared much better in the sixth as both teams were held scoreless with UNOH maintaining an 11-9 advantage.
  • Needing two runs to keep the game going, Cornerstone saw Jordan Wenzel get hit to lead-off the inning and get a runner on. Wenzel was immediately erased from the base pads as CU grounded into a double play. Cornerstone could not get any other offense, as they would fall 11-9 in game one.

Game Two – UNOH – 13 Cornerstone – 6
  • Dylan VandenBerg got the start for CU in game two and did a good job holding the Racers scoreless in the first inning.
  • UNOH would find the scoreboard in the second inning though, with an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Northwestern Ohio found three more runs in the third inning to take a 4-0 advantage. The inning began with a double and a steal of third from Otero. Otero later scored on an RBI single. A passed ball and a groundout allowed two more UNOH runs to score in the inning as Caden Ritsema came in for relief in the third inning for CU.
  • Cornerstone finally got to the UNOH starter in the fourth inning, as George Cutler hit a solo home run for his team leading ninth of the year. CU trailed 4-1 going into the fifth.
  • A resilient Golden Eagle team continued to chip away with the help of a Racer error. Jake Collins hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning, to score JC Salinas late in the inning making the CU deficit two at 4-2.
  • In the sixth, Matthew Kindley led-off with a single and Lucas Vega doubled to put runners on second and third. Jordan Wenzel brought a run home on a groundout as CU continued to chip into the deficit, 4-3.
  • UNOH had enough of the Golden Eagle comeback and would hit three consecutive singles to load the bases to start the bottom of the sixth inning. Jackson came up to bat and then hit a grand slam to balloon the Racer lead to 8-3.
  • Ben Barnes would come in and finish the sixth inning on the mound, but two more runs would score as UNOH led 10-3.
  • CU tried to begin to comeback yet again. They were able to load the bases and score on a hit by pitch to Matthew Kindley, a Lucas Vega single, and a passed ball that brought home Landon Poll to make it 10-6.
  • Another crucial error allowed UNOH to add an insurance run as Miller came around to score after a two-base error, a sacrifice bunt, and a ground out. Northwestern Ohio would string together a few more hits to score a total of three runs in the seventh to go back up by seven, 13-6.
  • Cornerstone looked for a comeback in the ninth down seven. Landon Poll and Matthew Kindley singled to lead-off the potential comeback in the ninth, but UNOH struck out the side to follow as Cornerstone fell 13-6 in game two.
