Men’s Volleyball defeats NCAA DII Quincy in five sets

QUINCY, Ill. – The Golden Eagles traveled to Quincy for their first ever meeting with the Hawks and won yet another five-set thriller as they take down an NCAA DII opponent for the first time in the program's history. CU is now 15-5 on the year as they have played four five set matches this season and won three of them. The Golden Eagles continue their Spring Break road trip at NAIA (14) Missouri Baptist tomorrow starting at 6 p.m. EST. 
 
Game Recap – Cornerstone – 3 Quincy – 2 (26-24, 14-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-12)
 
Set One:
  • After a kill from Hubert Sliwinski to open the match, Quincy, the NCAA DII opponent, got off to a hot start taking a 6-2 lead in set one. 
  • A kill from Brunno Peres and three consecutive Quincy attack errors helped the Golden Eagles get back into the set, trailing 11-8. 
  • Hubert Sliwinski added a service ace and Andrew Galanes added two kills to put CU on top 14-13. 
  • The two teams would trade points to sit tied at 17. Quincy then went on a 3-0 run to force the Golden Eagles to use a timeout down 20-17. 
  • Brunno Peres and Andrew Galanes would power Cornerstone back to tie the set at 23. 
  • CU would face a set point, 24-23, but come back again with a kill from Brunno Peres and two Quincy errors to steal set one, 26-24. 
Set Two:
  • Cornerstone started set two with a big block from Hubert Sliwinski and Andrew Galanes
  • Quincy then responded with seven straight points as setter Jonas Holzinger spread the ball around to all his hitters in the run. CU used their first timeout down 7-1. 
  • Hubert Sliwinski continued his strong day, helping CU get back into set two with a pair of kills to cut the deficit to 10-6. 
  • Cornerstone could not get any closer as Quincy went on a 9-2 run to lead 19-8. QU saw a pair of service aces and a big block to highlight the run. 
  • Quincy would cruise to a set two 25-14 victory to even the match at a set each. 
Set Three:
  • A kill from Brunno Peres early in set three gave a team their first multiple point advantage of the set at 6-4. Quincy responded right away with three of their own to lead 7-6. 
  • AJ Goedheer recorded two kills to help Quincy go on another 3-0 run that increased their lead to 10-7. 
  • Cornerstone could not get any closer than two points away from the lead the remainder of set two, as Quincy took it, 25-20.
Set Four:
  • The Galanes brothers would get set four started with a pair of kills for the first two points. 
  • David Galanes added a service ace as Cornerstone went out to a 6-2 advantage. 
  • After Quincy tried to comeback early, Patrick Voloch recorded a service ace that put the Golden Eagles back up by five, 12-7. 
  • CU later saw a 5-0 run that had a solo block and a kill from David Galanes as they sat in firm control, 23-14. 
  • Andrew Galanes recorded the final kill to force a set five, 25-17. 
Set Five:
  • The duo of Andrew Galanes and Brunno Peres stayed hot in the fifth as they each had kills to put CU on top 6-4 with a 3-0 run. 
  • Quincy responded with four straight points to lead 8-6. 
  • Quincy errors cost them all match as two more of them would give Cornerstone a 12-11 advantage.
  • Cornerstone ended the set on a 3-0 run with a block and a kill from Andrew Galanes
 
By the Numbers 
30 – Andrew Galenes and Brunno Peres combined for 30 kills on the day. 
24/18 – Quincy saw 24 attack errors and 18 service errors in the Golden Eagles victory. 
4 – Hubert Sliwinski led the team with four blocks, most of those coming early in the contest. 
 
What's Next? 
Cornerstone continues their Spring Break trip at NAIA (14) Missouri Baptist as they will begin a stretch against three ranked opponents this weekend.
