Poll scores on a walk-off winner as Baseball splits with Northwestern

DAVENPORT, Fla. – Landon Poll highlighted a Cornerstone split with Northwestern, recording the game tying hit and the game winning run, both in the seventh inning, in a walk-off 2-1 game one victory over Northwestern. The Raiders responded in game two to shutout the Golden Eagle offense and a 6-0 win. Cornerstone is now 4-8 on the year as they continue the Russ Matt Florida Invitational at Chain of Lakes Fields vs. Dordt College of Iowa starting at 12:30 p.m.

Game One – Cornerstone – 2 Northwestern – 1
  • Rafael Blom took the mound for the first time as a Golden Eagle, as the dutchman saw an interesting first inning. He walked the first batter before a sacrifice bunt attempt was called runner's interference that changed the momentum of the inning. Blom would get the next two batters out to end the inning with the game staying scoreless.
  • In the bottom of the inning, JC Salinas nearly led things off with a double to right field, but a diving catch saved the Raiders as CU went down 1-2-3 at the plate.
  • In the top of the second inning, the Raiders saw a couple ground balls sneak through the infield to score a run. The catcher Colby Shelton hit an RBI single to give Northwestern a 1-0 lead.
  • Rafael Blom was able to get a double play to end the second and keep the deficit at just one.
  • In the bottom of the third, Jordan Wenzel earned a two out walk to serve as the first Golden Eagle baserunner. The Golden Eagles attempted the hit and run but a fly out would end the inning as Cornerstone continued to trail 1-0.
  • Cornerstone could not figure out Northwestern starter Brett Shelton's splitter, as they had just one baserunner through four innings of play.
  • Rafael Blom would leave his outstanding outing with one out in the top of the fifth and the bases loaded. Josiah Stairs came in and was able to get a pair of strikeouts to leave them loaded and end the inning.
  • Cornerstone found their first hits of the game in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back infield singles from Lucas Vega and Landon Poll. Jordan Wenzel then walked to load the bases. JC Salinas again made great contact, but another diving catch kept CU off the scoreboard.
  • CU continued to come close to scoring as Jake Collins walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then got to third on a groundout from George Cutler. The runner would be stranded however with more great Raider defense, as Cornerstone trailed 1-0 going into the final inning.
  • Josiah Stairs kept it a one run game going into the bottom of the seventh.
  • Daniel Freeman led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to give CU a chance on the new pitcher Ryan Reynolds. A sacrifice bunt advanced pinch runner Caden Ritsema to second before Landon Poll hit a clutch RBI single to tie the game at one.
  • Later in the inning, Ryan Reynolds could not keep his command as a passed ball and wild pitch allowed Landon Poll to score and win the game for the Golden Eagles in walk-off fashion 2-1.

Game Two – Northwestern – 6 Cornerstone – 0
  • Brody Nelson got the start for CU in game two and had a clean first inning. In the second, Noa Vogel led the inning off with a double down the right field line to create a scoring opportunity for the Raiders. Vogel would score later in the inning on an RBI double from Mason Porepp to make it 1-0.
  • A second run would score in the bottom of the second on a wild pitch making the Northwestern lead 2-0.
  • Northwestern starter Brady Roberts sat the CU lineup down 1-2-3 in each of the first three innings to hold the 2-0 lead.
  • Matthew Kindley would be the first Cornerstone baserunner in game two, getting a hit in the top of the fifth with a single to left field. Lucas Vega later walked as runners sat on first and second, but CU could not get a run as they continued to trail 2-0.
  • Brody Nelson ran into a little bit of trouble in the bottom of the fifth as Northwestern would get runners on first and second with just one out. Alex Hayward would check in to pitch and get one of the two needed outs, but then lost command as two hit by pitches allowed a pair of runners to score increasing the Raider lead to 4-0.
  • Cam VanPutten came in and pitched the bottom of the sixth. After a quick two outs, Northwestern found more insurance runs highlighted by an RBI double to the gap in left center making it 6-0.
  • Cornerstone had no response on the offensive end in their final at bat as they would fall 6-0 in game two.
