Softball loses a close one to (17) Marian 9-8 and winning 10-0 against Fisher

COCOA, Fla. – Softball finished the day going 1-1 as they fought with #17 Marian losing 9-8 and winning in five innings against Fisher College 10-0. The Golden Eagles had the bats going today as they combined for 18 total runs where they had scored 15 in their first four games. Delaney Wilson led the way in the first game with three hits while Maddy Chatman drove in a team high two runs. Kaitlyn Cain led the way in the second game with two hits and three runs batted in. Cornerstone will be back in action on Thursday, March 9 where they face off against Saint Mary at 11:30 a.m. and Roosevelt at 2 p.m.
 
Game One Highlights – #17 Marian – 9 Cornerstone – 8
  • Alyssa Braam was the starting pitcher for the Golden Eagles as she downed #17 Marian In order to start the game. Jolie Groeneveld got the hitting started for Cornerstone as she opened the bottom of the first with a leadoff triple. Delaney Wilson would bring her home with a sharp single through the left side to give Cornerstone the early 1-0 lead.
  • Marian started the second inning with back-to-back walks as it came back to bite Alyssa Braam as the Knights tied the game 1-1 after the top of the second inning. Cornerstone threatened in the bottom half of the inning but left the bases loaded as Marian got out of the jam.
  • Marian instantly capitalized on the missed-out opportunity by the Golden Eagles by scoring three quick runs in the top of third to take the 4-1 lead. Cornerstone opened their half of the inning with back-to-back walks before Paige Liddell would hit a ground rule double to get the leadoff walk home. Next at bat, Maddy Chatman cleared the bases with a triple into the left-center gap to tie the game 4-4. The three next Golden Eagle batters all walked as they would take the 5-4 lead with zero outs in the inning still. A hit by pitch by Sydney Carr and a Bailey Anson walk gave Cornerstone a six-run inning to take a 7-4 lead after three innings.
  • McKenna Glide came into pitch for Cornerstone as she kept Marian at bay as the Knights and Golden Eagles have not scored the past two innings as Cornerstone still leads 7-4 after five innings.
  • After retiring the first batter of the inning, Marian answered with a single and a two-run homerun off the right field scoreboard to make it a 7-6 game. The Knights continued to hit as the next three batters singled to tie the game 7-7 with one out in the top of the sixth. Mikayla Meade came into relieve McKenna Glide to try and get out of the innings with a 7-7 tie. After getting the first batter out, a pinch-hitter for Marian came through with a two-out, two-RBI single to give Marian the 9-7 lead after the top half of the sixth inning. Paige Liddell led off the inning with a single and would later score on an error by the Knights to bring it within one-run. Cornerstone stranded the tying run at third as they headed into the seventh down one.
  • It was a quick inning for both Marian and Cornerstone in the seventh as the Knights snuck out with a 9-8 victory over Cornerstone.
 
Game Two Highlights – Cornerstone – 10 Fisher – 0
  • Fisher College got a two out single in the top half of the inning as Mikayla Meade started the game on a high note limiting the damage. Jolie Groeneveld got the bottom half of the inning started by getting hit by a pitch and stealing second base right away. Morgan Jenkins would bring her home with a double down the left-field line to give Cornerstone the early 1-0 lead. Jenkins would score on a Sydney Tilma RBI single as Cornerstone leads 2-0 after the first.
  • After Meade silenced Fisher's bats, Cornerstone went right back up to the plate and scored a quick run thanks to a Kaitlyn Cain RBI single up the middle to make it a 3-0 Cornerstone lead.
  • Mikayla Meade continued her dominance against FC by striking out the side to get the third inning going. Cornerstone's first three batters would reach base, leaving a bases loaded situation for Kaitlyn Cain where she delivered with a single to the shortstop that would score two, thanks to an overthrow. Giving Cornerstone a 5-0 lead.
  • Dylan Holmes led off the fourth inning with a nice single through the left side of the infield followed by another single by Taylor Zwagerman to get the inning rolling. Holmes would come home thanks to a wild pitch and Zwagerman would score on an error by the left fielder to give Cornerstone a 7-0 lead. Cornerstone would later add three more runs via walks and passed balls as they extended their lead to 10-0.
  • Sydney Tilma came into pitch in the 5th inning as she allowed one hit but set down Fisher to win 10-0 in five innings.

18 – Cornerstone scored 18 runs combined today while they scored 15 runs combined in the first four games.
7 – Mikayla Meade struck out seven over four-inning of pitching in the victory over Fisher.

Cornerstone has tomorrow off before being back in action on Thursday, March 9 against Saint Mary a 11:30 a.m. and Roosevelt at 2 p.m.
