ADRIAN, Mich. – The Golden Eagles scored a total of 19 runs over 14 innings on Monday afternoon in Adrian, highlighted by a 6-8 day at the plate from designated player Moriah Sprague. CU split with Siena Heights with an 8-5 game one victory and a 12-11 game two walk-off loss. CU moves to 12-14 on the year and 6-6 in WHAC play as they return home this weekend for their final two home series vs. Northwestern Ohio and Indiana Tech on Friday and Saturday.

Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 8 Siena Heights - 5
  • The scoring started in the second inning of game one for the Golden Eagles with a pair of doubles from Molly Poole and Maddy Chatman to go on top 1-0.
  • Mikayla Meade recorded a strong start in the circle allowing just one Saints hit through the first two innings.
  • Siena Heights starting pitcher Shyann Truax struggled with command going into the third inning, walking both Jolie Groeneveld and Delaney Wilson. Moriah Sprague took advantage with a double that scored both runs and increased the CU lead to 3-0.
  • Siena Heights was able to get to Mikayla Meade in the bottom of the third with four hits scoring two runs to cut the deficit to 3-2. Kat Moreau and Eva Curtis each hit RBI singles in the inning.
  • Alyssa Braam entered to pitch and got CU back on track nicely with a 1-2-3 fourth inning to hold the Cornerstone lead at 3-2.
  • The Saints struggled defensively throughout the game as Jolie Groeneveld led off the fifth getting on base with an error by the shortstop, the third of the day for SHU. Another error in right field allowed Groeneveld to score and increase the lead back to two at 4-2.
  • A scrappy Siena Heights team was able to get a run back in the bottom of the fifth to cut it to a one run game again. An error from the Golden Eagles extended the inning allowing Faith Breinager to score on a sacrifice fly making it 4-3.
  • Maddy Chatman quickly brought the CU lead back to two in the top of the sixth though with a solo home run to left field, her team leading fourth of the season. Cornerstone continued to add to the lead in the sixth as Bailey Anson doubled and later scored on a Morgan Jenkins triple to increase the advantage to 6-3. Jenkins then scored on a Jolie Groeneveld sacrifice fly as Cornerstone ended the top of the sixth with three runs to lead 7-3.
  • Siena Heights found a triple of their own in the bottom of the sixth that later scored on a sacrifice fly as they continued to try and chip away. Alyssa Braam continued to do a good job in limiting the damage though, allowing just the one to keep the score 7-4.
  • Maddy Chatman continued to dominate at the plate with another RBI on a single in the top of the seventh that brought the CU lead back to four.
  • Alyssa Braam stayed in there and was able to secure the victory after a wild double play that ended the inning. Siena Heights grounded out to right field and then was putout at second base by the first baseman Sydney Carr to end the game. However, the run counted as it crossed home before the final out was recorded, resulting in an 8-5 game one victory for CU.

Game Two Recap: Siena Heights – 12 Cornerstone – 11
  • Cornerstone carried momentum into game two with a lead-off single in the top of the first from Jolie Groeneveld and an RBI triple from Mackenzie Nagelhout to score the first run of the game. Delaney Wilson added a sacrifice fly later in the inning that scored Nagelhout and made it 2-0. Two more runs came across in the first, highlighted by an Emma Tornes RBI single, as the freshman got just her second start of the year in game two.
  • Sophomore McKenna Gilde got the start for the Golden Eagles in the circle for game two. She quickly took care of the Saints allowing just one hit to hold a CU 4-0 lead.
  • Siena Heights found the scoreboard for the first time in the bottom of the second. Faith Breinager hit a two RBI single through the right side to cut the deficit in half. After an error by Delaney Wilson continued the inning, Courtnee Chappetta cleared the bases with a three RBI triple to give the Saints their first lead 5-4.
  • Sydney Tilma would come in and give up one more run before getting out of it. CU trailed 6-4 headed to the third inning.
  • SHU starter Aila Johnson settled things down in the circle holding Cornerstone scoreless for the next three innings.
  • In the fifth, Cornerstone found their offense again with four runs crossing home to regain the lead 8-6 before SHU could even record an out. Moriah Sprague highlighted the fifth inning action with a two-run home run to left center. Siena Heights was able to stop the bleeding with a pair of strikeouts and a ground out, ending the inning with Cornerstone on top 8-6.
  • An insurance run was added in the top of the sixth as Moriah Sprague continued her dominance with an RBI single that scored Mackenzie Nagelhout and made it 9-6.
  • Mikayla Meade had re-entered in the fifth to try and secure the CU victory. She got out of the fifth but was unable to get out of the sixth without Siena Heights tying the game. Courtnee Chappetta brought home two runs with a double, and Eva Curtis added the game tying run with an RBI single as the score sat at 9-9 going into the seventh.
  • Bailey Anson came up with the big hit in the top of the seventh with an RBI single that scored pinch runner Kaitlyn Cain and put Cornerstone back on top 10-9. Anson later added a second run in the inning, scoring on a wild pitch to make it 11-9.
  • Mikayla Meade returned to the circle for the seventh and faced more trouble as SHU got a run back on an RBI double. Alyssa Braam entered with two runners in scoring position needing two outs to secure the game two victory. Braam was unable to get the necessary outs, as an RBI sacrifice bunt and a Courtnee Chappetta RBI single gave Siena Heights the 12-11 walk-off victory.
