Softball splits pair of lopsided contests vs. UNOH

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles dominated a tough UNOH team from start to finish in game one to earn a 4-0 victory. The tables then turned in game two as the Racers responded with a 7-1 win to split on Friday afternoon. Cornerstone recorded a much-needed victory to stay .500 in WHAC play at 7-7, and move to 13-15 on the year overall. Tomorrow the home stand comes to an end with Senior Day vs. (RV) Indiana Tech starting at 12 p.m.

Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 4 UNOH – 0
  • Mikayla Meade got off to a great start mowing down the Racer roster 1-2-3 in the top of the first inning.
  • In the top second, Mikayla Meade ran into some trouble, but she was able to strand UNOH runners at second and third to keep the game scoreless.
  • In the bottom of the second Maddy Chatman doubled and scored on a clutch two out RBI hit from Bailey Anson to put the Golden Eagles on top 1-0. Abby Brower would record another big hit down the left field line, but Anson was gunned down at home by Sydney Shaffer in left field to end the inning with just one run scored.
  • Alyssa Braam entered to pitch with a 1-0 CU lead in the top of the fourth. Abby Brower kept Braam's first batter off base making an outstanding diving catch in left field to preserve a no-hitter for the Golden Eagles.
  • Emma Tornes recorded a huge RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the fourth to add an insurance run and put CU on top 2-0.
  • Sam Timmer added to the strong game one for CU with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The HR to left field was her second of the year increasing the lead to 4-0.
  • UNOH recorded their first hit of the day in the top of the sixth on a single up the middle from Sidney Unger. After one more single up the middle, Alyssa Braam was able to get out of it to keep the Racers scoreless.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, CU continued to put pressure on UNOH loading the bases, but they were unable to score as the lead stayed at four.
  • Alyssa Braam returned for the seventh and was able to secure the 4-0 victory for a huge game one win for the Golden Eagles.

Game Two Recap: UNOH – 7 Cornerstone - 1
  • Mikayla Meade started game two as well and got off to a strong start as both teams were scoreless through the first inning.
  • A two out error in the top of the second allowed UNOH to score a run and take a 1-0 lead.
  • UNOH added to their lead in the top of the third as more errors cost CU. Chloe Goutler reached via an error and later scored on a groundout. Then came the big play where Anna Ankney singled to right field and came all the way around to score on an error by right field along with teammate Sidney Unger to make it 4-0.
  • The Racers added a fifth run off new pitcher Alyssa Braam in the top of the fourth on an RBI double from Autumn Pelok.
  • Cornerstone found the score line for the first time in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Maddy Chatman that brought home pinch runner Shylin Robirds. That would be all CU would be able to find as they trailed 5-1.
  • Dani Keighley gave UNOH two more runs in the seventh to completely take command at 7-1. CU would go down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to fall 7-1 in game two.
