Five Seniors honored for Softball as they split against (RV) Indiana Tech

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Softball celebrated senior day as they honored five seniors in a day that saw them hand the first conference loss to Indiana Tech as they split a pair of games. Indiana Tech got the best of Cornerstone in the first game winning 2-0 as the Golden Eagles returned the favor in game two winning 6-4, giving them the first conference loss of the season. All five seniors were able to play as Bailey Anson, Sydney Carr, Mikayla Meade, Molly Poole, and Shylin Robirds were all celebrated for their careers as a Cornerstone Golden Eagle. Softball will close out the season on the road as their next matchup will be a reschedule double-header against Rochester on Wednesday, April 19 starting at 3:30 p.m.

Game One Highlights – Indiana Tech – 2 Cornerstone - 0
  • Mikayla Meade got the start for Senior Day and worked a quick first inning, giving up a two-out single but keeping the Warriors off the board. The Warriors worked a quick bottom of the first as the game is scoreless after the first inning.
  • After a single and stolen base to start the third inning for the Warriors, a one-out single brought the first run of the game home for Indiana Tech. Meade would later strand a runner on second to limit the damage to one.
  • Indiana Tech pitching has been the difference in the game through the first four innings. Moriah Sprague gets the first hit of the game as the Warriors lead 1-0 after the fourth inning.
  • Indiana Tech and Cornerstone continue to be in a pitching duel as the Warriors have given up just one hit as they lead 1-0 after the sixth inning.
  • Indiana Tech was able to add an insurance thanks to some mistakes by the Cornerstone fielders to make it 2-0 in the final inning. Cornerstone was not able to score any runs in the bottom of thr seventh as Indiana Tech took game one 2-0.

Game Two Highlights – Cornerstone – 6 Indiana Tech - 4
  • McKenna Gilde got the start in game two and worked a quick first inning with a strikeout to get the game rolling. Mackenzie Nagelhout got the first hit of the game for Cornerstone and would steal second but that is as far as she would go as the game remains scoreless after the first.
  • Cornerstone had something going in the bottom of the third as the first three batters reached base as Delaney Wilson would bring home the first run of the game with a sac fly to right field. Two batters later Sam Timmer came through a double off the left field wall to score two, to make it 3-0. Another run would score thanks to an error by the Warriors as the Golden Eagles lead 4-0 after the third.
  • Indiana Tech started off the top of the fourth hot as after two batters, they scored their first run of the game to make it 4-1 as McKenna Gilde would limit the damage leaving a runner on third.
  • Alyssa Braam relieved McKenna Glide and worked her magic the top of the fifth getting out of a second and third jam by striking out the last two batters in the inning to keep it a 4-1 Cornerstone lead after the top of the fifth. The Golden Eagles instantly responded as Moriah Sprague would bring home a run with an RBI double to make it 5-1 as Cornerstone would add one more thanks to a Warrior error making it 6-1 after the fifth.
  • Indiana Tech used an error and wild pitch to score one in the top of the sixth to make it 6-2.
  • Indiana Tech tried to use a rally in the top of the seventh as they scored two runs to make it 6-4 but Alyssa Braam wouldn't let them have an opportunity to score more as they take game two 6-4.
