Softball splits a road pair at UM-Dearborn

DETROIT, Mich. – Cornerstone continued the end of the WHAC season at UM-Dearborn on Friday and earned a split, falling in walk-off fashion 5-4 in game one before rebounding with a 4-2 victory in game two. The dynamic duo of Moriah Sprague and Mackenzie Nagelhout continued their heroics at the plate, combining for eight hits as CU moves to 17-17, 11-9 WHAC on the year. The Golden Eagles will next play Monday at Concordia in a rescheduled double-header as rain has postponed the games that were initially scheduled for tomorrow.

Game One Recap: UM-Dearborn – 5 Cornerstone – 4
  • Cornerstone wasted no time getting on the scoreboard finding a run in the top of the first inning. Mackenzie Nagelhout walked for the first baserunner. Delaney Wilson then singled, and Moriah Sprague hit an RBI single to score Nagelhout and make it 1-0.
  • Mikayla Meade got off to a strong start in the circle, striking out three batters in the first two innings to keep the Wolverines scoreless.
  • In the second and third inning, Cornerstone was able to get a runner in scoring position but were unable to score. UM-Dearborn pitcher Lanie Ellinger was able to avoid danger as CU continued to lead 1-0.
  • CU added an insurance run in the top of the fourth. Molly Poole hit a one out triple and later scored on an Abby Brower single to left field.
  • UM-Dearborn started to put pressure on Cornerstone, but Mikayla Meade continued to get out of it stranding four runners in the bottom of the third and fourth to keep the Golden Eagle lead at 2-0.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, the Wolverines broke through with an RBI double from Makenna Millhorn to cut their deficit in half at 2-1. Alyssa Braam entered with one out in the inning to replace Mikayla Meade. With the help of Molly Poole catching a runner trying to steal third, Braam was able to get the final two outs ending the fifth.
  • The runs would not stop there though for the Wolverines, taking their first lead of the game on a massive home run from Gabby Rolak. She cranked a two-run shot to left field to put UMD on top 3-2.
  • Cornerstone responded immediately, taking advantage of an early UM-Dearborn error in the top of the seventh. Mackenzie Nagelhout and Moriah Sprague continued their strong days each hitting an RBI single to regain the lead, 4-3.
  • Alyssa Braam returned for the bottom of the seventh looking to earn the win. After a quick out she would walk Makenna Millhorn to put the tying run on base. Amber Cheplick was then the hero with a two-run walk-off home run to give the Wolverines the 5-4 game one victory.

Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 4 UM-Dearborn – 2
  • Just like game one, Cornerstone got off to a great start in the top of the first. Mackenzie Nagelhout and Delaney Wilson each singled with one out. Sam Timmer later grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Nagelhout and made it 1-0.
  • UM-Dearborn found an answer off starter McKenna Gilde in the bottom of the second. Olivia Scott hit an RBI double that tied the game at one.
  • The red-hot Moriah Sprague continued her tear with a quick response in the top of the third, hitting an RBI single to score Mackenzie Nagelhout and regain a 2-1 advantage.
  • The starting pitching then settled in as neither team scored in the fourth inning.
  • CU added an insurance run in the top of the fifth, as once again Moriah Sprague hit an RBI single to score pinch runner Dylan Holmes and make it 3-1.
  • Cornerstone added one more run on a Jolie Groeneveld RBI single in the top of the sixth to make it 4-1.
  • McKenna Gilde faced trouble all game long, specifically in the seventh inning as the Wolverines had runners on second and third with one out and the tying run at the plate. Gilde was able to record a fly out and ground out after one run scored to secure the complete game 4-2 victory. Gilde gave up 13 total hits but allowed just two runs in the win.
