ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Golden Eagles ended conference play in a rescheduled double-header at Concordia on Monday, and despite two valiant comeback efforts, they would fall in both games. CU fell 8-5 in game one and 10-6 in game two to drop to 17-19, 11-11 WHAC. Cornerstone will conclude the regular season tomorrow with one final road double-header in Chicago at Roosevelt out of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC).
Game One Recap: Concordia - 8 Cornerstone – 5
- Cornerstone got off to a great start as the second batter of the game in Mackenzie Nagelhout hit a solo home run to left center field to take a 1-0 advantage.
- The Cardinals responded in the bottom of the first with a run of their own to tie the game. A lead-off walk came around to score on a two-out RBI single from Dee Campbell.
- Concordia added three more runs in the bottom of the second for their first lead of the game. Action was highlighted by a two RBI triple from Sarah Tyrrell that made it 4-1.
- Jolie Groeneveld got a run back for Cornerstone in the top of the third with a solo bomb of her own. Delaney Wilson added a two-out single to score Mackenzie Nagelhout, bringing the CU deficit to one at 4-3.
- Starting pitcher Mikayla Meade was able to hold the Cardinals scoreless for the first time in the bottom of the third inning, working around a lead-off single.
- Concordia managed the bases well all game as they were able to get some insurance runs back with a sacrifice fly and an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth. Concordia led 6-3 going into the fifth inning.
- Katie Tobias added a two-run HR for Concordia in the bottom of the fifth for their largest lead of the game at 8-3.
- Cornerstone got two runs back in the top of the seventh on a two RBI single from Delaney Wilson but that was all, as they fell 8-5 in game one to drop to 17-18 on the year.
Game Two Recap: Concordia – 10 Cornerstone – 6
- Just like they did in game one, Cornerstone got off to a great start with a home run. This time the red-hot Moriah Sprague hit the deep ball for a two-run shot to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.
- Concordia responded just like they did in game one, getting to pitcher Alyssa Braam in the bottom of the first with three runs. Dee Campbell hit an RBI single, and Katie Tobias hit a two-run home run to give the Cardinals a 3-2 advantage.
- Both teams would go down 1-2-3 in the second inning.
- After quickly getting the first out in the bottom of the third, Concordia would add four more runs. CUAA singled three consecutive times to score one run, then Maddy Grueter hit a three-run home run to left field to increase the Cardinal lead, 7-2.
- Cornerstone responded with more power of their own in the top of the fourth to get three runs back. After a Sam Timmer single and Emma Tornes walk, Maddy Chatman hit a HR to dead center field to cut the deficit to two at 7-5.
- Sydney Tilma entered to pitch for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the fourth inning and got off to a tough start after a fielding error. Tilma and the CU defense responded nicely though with a big run down out at the plate to keep Concordia scoreless in the inning.
- A Delaney Wilson sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth helped Cornerstone continue to chip away. CU trailed by just one going into their final two turns at bat.
- Cornerstone threatened again in the sixth but was unable to score after getting two runners on, keeping the score 7-6 in favor of Concordia.
- A two-out Cornerstone error extended the bottom of the sixth that badly cost the Golden Eagles. Back-to-back CU home runs gave three insurance runs to the Cardinals and made it 10-6. Sydney Tilma was forced to exit, and McKenna Gilde entered to pitch.
- Cornerstone was unable to get anything back in the seventh, falling 10-6 in game two.
