Freshman firepower helps Softball sweep Roosevelt to end the regular season

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Golden Eagles saw freshman firepower as they were able to steal two wins on the road from Roosevelt on Tuesday afternoon. CU won game one 4-2 and game two 8-4, behind five hits from the freshman duo of Kaitlyn Cain and Dylan Holmes to move to 19-19 on the year. Cornerstone will now wait until May 3 to begin the WHAC Tournament down in Ohio with seeding and first round opponent still to be announced. 
 
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 4 Roosevelt – 2
  • Another strong Golden Eagle start to a first game go the double-header started in Chicago. Mackenzie Nagelhout and Delaney Wilson each singled to lead-off the game. Roosevelt starter Kate Sisson was able to avoid the early trouble though and get the three necessary outs without allowing a run in the top of the first inning. 
  • In the bottom of the first inning, Cornerstone saw a key error that allowed a run to score as Roosevelt took a 1-0 lead.  
  • The Lakers starter Kate Sisson continued to find success in the circle racking up the strikeouts with seven through four innings of work. 
  • In the top of the fifth, Mackenzie Nagelhout created some havoc with a bunt single and a stolen base to get in scoring position with no outs. After a single from Delaney Wilson, pinch runner Kaitlyn Cain would steal a base to put two runners in scoring position with still no outs. Moriah Sprague and Sam Timmer would then each record an RBI to give CU a 2-1 lead.
  • Roosevelt was able to get a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth, but reliever Alyssa Braam got a big double-play to keep RU from tying the game. 
  • McKenna Gilde took over to pitch the sixth for CU. Bailee Reynolds was able to get to her with a two-out RBI double that tied the game at two. A flyout ended the inning for Gilde as CU went into their final turn at bat with the game tied.  
  • Cornerstone got their lead right back on a clutch RBI single from Maddy Chatman that scored Mackenzie Nagelhout. The momentum continued, as Bailey Anson added an RBI single of her own to increase the lead to 4-2. 
  • McKenna Gilde stayed in for the bottom of the looking to secure the victory. After giving up a lead-off single, she was able to secure the final three outs to get the Golden Eagles a 4-2 game one victory. 
 
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 8 Roosevelt - 4
  • A first inning Maddy Chatman triple kept CU rolling offensively. Chatman later scored on a Molly Poole sacrifice fly. A second run then scored on a Sydney Tilma RBI single to get Cornerstone out to an early 2-0 lead. 
  • Mikayla Meade pitch the first two innings for Cornerstone getting a 1-2-3 first and avoiding trouble in the second to keep the score 2-0.  
  • In the bottom of the third, Roosevelt found their first run off new pitcher Sydney Tilma on an RBI double after another Cornerstone error. The Golden Eagles recorded three errors in the first three innings but were able to maintain a 2-1 lead. 
  • In the fourth, Cornerstone got some insurance runs led by the talented freshman class. Kaitlyn Cain singled to drive in Dylan Holmes and then later scored on an error. Veteran Jolie Groeneveld then hit an RBI double to score Abby Brower, giving the Golden Eagles a 5-1 advantage. 
  • The scoring did not stop there as Roosevelt had a small response of their own with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth. 
  • More freshman firepower came in the top of the fifth, as Dylan Holmes recorded her second hit of the game with a two RBI triple to right center. CU increased their lead to 7-2. 
  • Alyssa Braam came in to pitch in the bottom of the fifth looking to protect a five-run lead. The Lakers were able to keep the offense rolling though, scoring two runs on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single that made it 7-4. 
  • Kaitlyn Cain continued the freshman heroics with an RBI triple in the top of the seventh to add another insurance run for the Golden Eagles and made it 8-4. 
  • Alyssa Braam was able to close out the game to secure an 8-4 game two victory for CU. 
 
By the Numbers
5 – Prior to game one of today's double-header, CU had scored in the first inning in five consecutive contests. 
5-7 – The freshman duo of Kaitlyn Cain and Dylan Holmes combined to go 5-7 with four RBI in game two. 
19-19 – Cornerstone ends the regular season at .500 with 19 wins and 19 losses. 
 
What's Next?
Cornerstone will await to hear who they will play in the WHAC Tournament down in Ohio as they will open play on May 3.
