SYLVANIA, Ohio – As part of a day full of upsets in the WHAC Tournament, Cornerstone was able to take a pair from the number two seed and the number three seed to go a perfect 2-0 on day one for the first time in nine years. CU started their day with a 4-2 victory over UNOH before downing Concordia 3-0 to stay in the winner's bracket headed into tomorrow's day two of the WHAC Tournament. The solo home run was crucial on the day, as Cornerstone saw three with two of those by
Sydney Carr. The Golden Eagles will take on the winner of Madonna and Lawrence Tech tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. back at Pacesetter Park for their next game.
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 4 UNOH – 2
- Cornerstone started the WHAC Tournament with a bang, as lead-off hitter Jolie Groeneveld hit a solo home run to open things. CU took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the first inning as Mikayla Meade came out to pitch.
- In the bottom of the first, Jolie Groeneveld made a great defensive play to get the force at third and strand two UNOH runners after a pair of singles to keep the score 1-0.
- Just like the first inning, the Golden Eagles saw a lead-off bomb in the second inning, as Sydney Carr hit a deep ball to dead center field. A double play ended the inning for Cornerstone at the plate leading 2-0.
- Carlie Hanes gave up a lead-off single in the top of the third but was able to get out of it for her first scoreless inning in the circle. Cornerstone continued to lead 2-0.
- Zoe Johnson, the Racer catcher, continued an outstanding game behind the dish, catching her second runner stealing of the game to end the top of the fourth.
- A two out error in the bottom of the fourth allowed Northwestern Ohio to get their first run of the game on starter Mikayla Meade cutting the CU advantage in half.
- After a Maddy Chatman lead-off single in the top of the fifth, she would come all the way around to score after a huge error on a sacrifice bunt attempt from Bailey Anson. Another error on an infield single from Abbey Brower allowed Anson to come around and score making it 4-1.
- UNOH got a run back in the bottom of the fifth as Tess Denning hit a solo home run to left field to bring the score to 4-2.
- After a quick 1-2-3 at the plate for the Golden Eagles in the top of the sixth they went right back out on defense. Alyssa Braam came into pitch the final two innings for the Golden Eagles looking for a save.
- Abbey Brower and Jolie Groeneveld were able to draw walks for CU but were unable to score in the top of the seventh, keeping the score 4-2.
- Alyssa Braam would get a 1-2-3 seventh with a strikeout to not allow a hit in her two innings and secure the save as Cornerstone took game one 4-2 to advance to the winner's bracket vs. Concordia.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 3 Concordia - 0
- Cornerstone again got off to a great start in game two, scoring a run on a Moriah Sprague bloop single after a walk from Jolie Groneveld and a bunt hit from Mackenzie Nagelhout. A second run was added on an RBI sacrifice bunt from Sydney Carr that scored Nagelhout.
- Game two starter McKenna Gilde ran into some first inning trouble but got the needed strikeout to end the inning and keep the Cornerstone 2-0 lead going into the second.
- Catcher Sam Timmer helped CU on the defensive end in the bottom of the second inning, catching a runner stealing to again keep Concordia scoreless.
- Sydney Carr stayed red hot, hitting her second solo home run of the day in the top of the fourth inning to increase the lead to 3-0.
- McKenna Gilde glided through the first four innings of work, allowing just two hits while striking out three batters to hold the 3-0 Golden Eagle lead.
- Mikayla Meade took over for McKenna Gilde in the sixth inning looking to record the final six outs vs. Concordia. She made quick work of the Cardinals in the sixth, striking out two to record a 1-2-3 inning.
- Cornerstone got a lead-off walk from Maddy Chatman in the top of the seventh looking to add insurance. Concordia would respond with a double play to keep the deficit at three going into the final half inning.
- The Cardinals were able to create some havoc on Mikayla Meade in the seventh but would not score as Cornerstone took the game 3-0.
