Baseball ends their season with a sweep over UM-Dearborn as the seniors are celebrated

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – It was the final day of the season for Baseball as they celebrated the day with two victories as well as their seniors. Cornerstone celebrated 14 seniors between the varsity and junior varsity team that saw the Golden Eagles win game one 8-3 behind strong pitching by Caden Ritsema and game two 13-2 behind a strong offensive performance. It was a great way for the seniors as every one of them had at least one hit in the game with George Cutler hitting the only homerun on the day for Cornerstone. This was the final games for the Golden Eagles as their season comes to a close as they fell short of making the WHAC Tournament. Game One Highlights – Cornerstone – 8 UM-Dearborn - 3
  • Caden Ritsema got the game one start and after two quick outs, Matthew Williams of UM-Dearborn hit a solo HR to get the Wolverines on the board first. Grant Young led off the inning with a single through the left side as Landon Poll would then get hit by the pitch to get the inning started for the Golden Eagles. Jake Collins would come through with an RBI single up the middle and then Matthew Kindley would follow that up with an opposite field double to score two to give Cornerstone the 3-1 lead.
  • Caden Ritsema has settled in nicely after giving up the homerun in the first inning striking out three batters over the last two innings, only giving up one baserunner as Cornerstone continues to lead 3-1.
  • The Golden Eagles started the fourth inning with three straight singles as the final single by Evan Shirley brough home JC Salinas to extend the Cornerstone lead 4-1 with no outs. Jordan Wenzel would continue the hit parade with another single to bring home Sam Bussler to make it 5-1. Make it five straight hits as Grant Young brings in two with a single into left field to make it 7-1. Landon Poll makes it six straight hits with another single through the left side as there continues to be no outs. UM-Dearborn gets the first out of the inning on a Jake Collins sac fly as the Golden Eagles make it 8-1.
  • Caden Ritsema continues to dominate in his final outing of the season as he works another quick one-two-three inning and has settled into a nice groove since the first inning. Cornerstone continues to lead 8-1 after the top of the sixth.
  • UM-Dearborn gets a few hits and scores two as their last inning rally falls short as Cornerstone would win game one 8-3.
 
Game Two Highlights – Cornerstone – 13 UM-Dearborn – 2          F/7
  • Brendan Miller got the start in game two for the Golden Eagles and struck out a pair of UM-Dearborn hitters to kick off his final regular season outing. Grant Young led off the game with a single up the middle and would later come home on a Jake Collins RBI double as the Golden Eagles would strike first. Matthew Kindley would bring home Collins with an RBI single as they take a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.
  • Brendan Miller has continued to pitch well through three innings as he continues to keep UM-Dearborn off the board. Jake Collins got his second double of the game as Cornerstone left the bases loaded as they continue to lead 2-0 after the third inning.
  • Back-to-back innings the Golden Eagles had the bases loaded and this time they came through as Matthew Kindley brings them all home with a triple in the left center gap. Ben Barnes brings him home with an RBI single as George Cutler would follow that up with an opposite field two-run homerun to give Cornerstone the 8-0 lead. Cornerstone scored six runs all with two-outs in the bottom of the fourth.
  • UM-Dearborn loaded the bases with one-out as they would come through with a bloop single to score two as it would force Miller out of the game as Lucas Vega came in to limit the damage.
  • Evan Shirley leads off the inning with a double and would later score on a single by Grant Young as they would respond to the UM-Dearborn's runs. Young would come home on a single by Matthew Kindley and Collins would score on a wild pitch as they would extend their lead to 11-2 after the fifth inning.
  • UM-Dearborn found themselves struggling to catch flyballs as they turned to hits for the Golden Eagles as they just watched the ball drop. Grant Young used that to his advantage with a two-run RBI to make it 13-2.
  • Lucas Vega closed out the game for the Golden Eagles as they completed the sweep, winning game two 13-2.
