Softball hosted Aquinas for the Strikeout Cancer Games as they lost in game one

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Softball hosted Aquinas for Strikeout Cancer Games as both teams wore special pink jerseys highlighting family members and friends who have gone through or battling cancer. It was a back-and-forth game between in Aquinas and Cornerstone as when Aquinas scored, Cornerstone would answer but too many big innings for the Saints saw them take the game one victory 11-6. Game two was stopped after the first inning as rain continued to fall at a steady pace as the game will be made up a later date. Cornerstone will now hit the road as they face off against Rochester on Wednesday, April 5 for a double header starting at 3:30 p.m.
 
Game One Highlights – Aquinas – 11 Cornerstone - 6
  • Mikayla Meade got the start for the Golden Eagles in game one against Aquinas and worked around back-to-back two-out singles to keep the Saints off the board.
  • Aquinas got to Meade in the second inning loaded the bases on three-straight singles. Two runs would score on the Golden Eagles error as the next batter would follow that up with a double off the center field wall brining home two more. The Saints lead 4-0 after the top of second inning.
  • Mackenzie Nagelhout and Sydney Carr led off the inning with back-to-back singles as Moriah Sprague would bring home the first run of the game for Cornerstone with a sharp single to right field. Cornerstone would later strand runners on second and third as Aquinas leads 4-1 after the fourth inning.
  • Aquinas would respond right away in the top of the fifth, after hitting the first batter of the inning, Aquinas would bring her home with a double into the left-center gap to make it 5-1. With two-outs, a sharp single through the left side extended the Saints lead 6-1. Cornerstone loaded the bases to start the bottom of the fifth with three-straight singles as they were in business. One run would score on a wild pitch as Moriah Sprague would bring in another run with an infield single to make it 6-3 after the bottom of the fifth.
  • Aquinas adds an insurance run in the top of the seventh with well-placed bloop singles as they lead 7-3. With two-outs, Aquinas cleared the bases with double into the left-center gap and followed that up with another double to blow open the game as they now lead 11-3 after the top of the seventh. Sydney Carr would bring home a run with a sharp double over the center fielder's head. Another run would score on an error by the Saints as Maddy Chatman would hit a triple down the right field line to make it an 11-6 game as the late rally comes short as Aquinas wins game one.
 
 
Game Two Highlights – Suspended after the first inning
  • Alyssa Braam got the start in game two for the Golden Eagles striking out a pair of batters to get the game rolling in the sprinkling rain. Cornerstone threatened in the bottom of the first as the rain affected the pitcher but stranded runners on the corners to keep the game scoreless at the end of the first.
