Baseball sees dominant pitching and hitting in the sweep over Rochester

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – Baseball continued their good stretch of baseball with a sweep of Rochester winning game one 6-1 and game two 11-2. It was an overall dominant performance by the Golden Eagles as the pitching gave up two-earned runs in 16 innings of play while the offense totaled 17 runs on 18 hits. Caden Ritsema went the distance in game one while Andrew Meny led the way for the offense with six-hits in the leadoff spot. Cornerstone will be right back in action tomorrow Saturday, April 8 hosting Indiana Tech for a double-header starting at 1 p.m.

Game One Highlights – Cornerstone – 6 Rochester – 1

Poll would later score on an error by the Rochester pitcher to give Cornerstone the early 1-0 after the top of the first. Caden Ritsema got the start for the Golden Eagles and worked a quick bottom-half of the first inning.
  • Cornerstone had runners on first and second as Landon Poll steps up to the plate and drives in a run to extend the lead 2-0 after the top of the fourth. Ritsema continued to dominate as he has allowed one hit through four innings.
  • A one-out walk by Rochester got the inning going as the next batter would bring him home with a long double to left-center field to make it a 2-1 game after the fifth inning.
  • Grant Young led off the top of the sixth with a walk and would later score thanks to a two-out RBI single by JC Salinas to give Cornerstone a needed insurance run to make it 3-1 after the top of the sixth.

Game Two Highlights – Cornerstone – 11 Rochester – 2
  • Landon Poll got the inning going for the Golden Eagles with a one-out double. A hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases for George Cutler as he also gets hit by a pitch to give Cornerstone the early 1-0 lead. Rochester would answer with a run of their own in the bottom of the first taking advantage of an error by the Golden Eagles, as it is tied 1-1 after one.
  • An Andrew Meny double gives Cornerstone runners on second and third with one out as Landon Poll drives in the run from third to give Cornerstone the 2-1 lead after the top of the second.
  • Rochester got to VandenBerg in the bottom of third as two singles and a stolen base makes it first and third for the Warriors. They would bring the tying run home on a sac fly to make it 2-2 after the bottom of the third.
  • Andrew Meny led off the fifth inning with a double as Landon Poll followed that up by getting by a pitch. Jake Collins came through with a double into the left field gap that scores a run to retake the lead 3-2. JC Salinas would follow that up with a double of his own that scores two runs as Cornerstone would extend their lead 5-2. The Golden Eagles would score one more on an error making it 6-2 after the top of the fifth.
  • Rochester gave Cornerstone three free passes to load the bases for Grant Young as he would walk in a run himself as the Golden Eagles would take advantage of the struggling Rochester pitching. Now a 7-2 lead after the top of the seventh.
