2023 Outlook
Cornerstone comes into the 2023 campaign with a lot of offensive potential, returning the team's leading goal scorer in
Tyler Corstange. Corstange netted 10 goals as a freshman and recorded the most goals by a single player in a decade with his performance. CU also returns
Calvin Curtis and
Jeff Herrema who finished third and fourth respectively in points a season ago. The defensive end is where the new faces come in for CU, returning just one every day starter in the backline of
Caleb Griffith. Freshman defenders
Liam McHugh and
Trevor VanderMeer look to help the backline, while also seeing additional midfield roster additions of
Breven Willis,
Seth Campbell, and
Steven Stidham.
Strong Start in 2022
Cornerstone got off to their best start since the 2006 season last year when they began the campaign 3-0-3. CU did not lose until September 20 on the road at eventual NAIA National Champion Bethel University of Indiana. The Golden Eagles finished 2022 with a 6-8-4 overall record, struggling in the tough Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC). CU looks to replicate the strong start from a season ago, taking on a Saint Francis team that finished last in the Crossroads League in 2022.
Championship Blood
After a tough 2022 season, Saint Francis has hired a new coach in Mamba Chisoni. Chisoni comes to Saint Francis from Bethel, where he served as an assistant for the 2022 NAIA National Champion Pilot program. Outside of coaching, Chisoni has an extensive playing career as well, where he played for the Zimbabwe u20 National Team and competed at Coastal Carolina at the NCAA DI level before a professional career that saw time both in England and Major League Soccer (MLS).
