GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone women's soccer kicked off the home athletic season infront of a packed home crowd, falling in a close matchup against Goshen 2-1. Sophia Yoder was the difference maker in this game, scoring a goal in both halves as Freshman
Gracie Gortmaker scored her first collegiate goal to give Cornerstone their first points of the season. Cornerstone will be back in action next week against another Crossroads League opponent in Saint Francis (Ind.) on Friday, September 1 starting at 6 p.m.
Game Recap: Goshen – 2 Cornerstone - 1
First Half
- The first shot of the year for the Golden Eagles came off the foot of Arianna Rau that was saved by the Goshen keeper in the first minute of the match.
- Goshen had their first opportunity of the game in the 8th minute with a corner kick, but the Golden Eagles defense stopped any chance for the Maple Leafs.
- Cornerstone had an opportunity in the 18th minute with their first corner kick of the season, but the defense of Goshen stopped any opportunity.
- Goshen strikes first in the 27th minute after a pass from Seja Lang gets past the Cornerstone keeper that finds the foot of Sophia Yoder who sends it in the back of the net to make it 1-0.
- The Golden Eagles had multiple opportunities to find the back of the net but shots off the foot had gone just wide for Cornerstone.
- Goshen heads into halftime leading 1-0, but Cornerstone has out-shot the Maple Leafs 7-2.
Second Half
- The Golden Eagles continued to be the aggressors in this game as a shot by Tori Woodwyk was saved by the Goshen goalie in the 47th minute. Still searching to find the back of the net.
- All the shots on goal by the Golden Eagles finally paid off as Gracie Gortmaker scored her first collegiate goal, hitting the under part of the top crossbar and in to tie it 1-1 in the 57th minute.
- After taking the first 20 minutes off of the second half, Sophia Yoder checks in and immediately scores a goal that goes in-and-out of the Cornerstone keepers hands to make it 2-1 in the 67th minute.
- Gracie Gortmaker continued to stay aggressive as her shot on goal was saved by the Goshen goalie in the 75th minute.
- A shot in the 81st minute by Goshen was saved by Morgan Scholten to keep it a 2-1 game.
- Cornerstone had the perfect opportunity in the 86th minute with a corner kick that was played perfectly by the Goshen defense, not allowing the Golden Eagles to score.
- Goshen played keep away for the final three minutes, stalling out the clock to win the game 2-1.
