SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Golden Eagles WHAC Regular Season win streak dating back to 2022 ends at a program record 21 games with a five-set loss at Lourdes on Friday evening. Cornerstone took set one before dropping three of the next four: 25-21, 20-25, 17-25, 25-18, 12-15. CU went into the match slightly short-handed, and they look to rebound and get back above .500 tomorrow at Siena Heights for a 4 p.m. match.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 2 Lourdes – 3 (25-21, 20-25, 17-25, 25-18, 12-15)
Set One:
- Freshman Dyllan Hanna got her first start of her career and recorded the first kill of the match as Cornerstone got out to an early 3-0 lead.
- The freshmen continued to look good early with service aces from Dyllan Hanna and Alli Pickard helping increase the Cornerstone edge to 9-3.
- Eliza Thelen then combined for a pair of blocks to keep the large lead.
- Lourdes started to chip away with two and three point runs to get back within one point at 14-13.
- Cornerstone refused to relinquish the lead as setter Aubrey Lenz distributed the ball well down the stretch of set one. Hannah Giere, Dyllan Hannah, Aubrey Lenz, Eliza Thelen, and Jada Thomas would all record kills down the stretch to win 25-21.
Set Two:
- After falling behind early in set two, Hannah Giere sparked a 3-0 Golden Eagle run with two big kills. Cornerstone led 6-4.
- A kill by Eliza Thelen would give CU a three point advantage at 8-5.
- With set two tied at 10, Lourdes would go on a 5-2 run to force a Golden Eagle timeout. Three different Gray Wolves recorded kills along with a fourth player adding a service ace to lead 15-12.
- The Eliza Thelen block party continued to help CU back into the set. She helped combine for two more as Cornerstone cut the deficit to one at 18-17.
- Lourdes then got in their own way, recording back-to-back errors to give Cornerstone the lead again at 20-19.
- The Gray Wolves kept the lead changes going, responding with a 3-0 run that saw a kill from Chelsie Raabe and forced a Golden Eagle timeout.
- After the timeout, CU was unable to get anything going. Lourdes took set two 25-20 with a 6-0 run to end the set.
Set Three:
- Momentum completely shifted to Lourdes in the third set. LU went on a 9-2 run to lead 11-4.
- The Lourdes lead grew to as large as eight on a Cornerstone service error at 14-6.
- The duo of Hannah Giere and Eliza Thelen were once again the faces trying to rally CU back into the set. The two combined for three kills and a block to help Cornerstone get back within four.
- The Golden Eagles were unable to complete the full comeback as a big Lourdes block and a kill from Macey Zinser gave them set three, 25-17.
Set Four:
- Cornerstone started set four much better than set three using a 4-0 run to go on top 7-5. Hannah Giere recorded three more kills in the run to bring her match total to 11, tying her career high.
- Moments later, Hannah Giere would record kill number 12 for a new single match career high as Cornerstone led 8-6.
- After Lourdes tied the set at nine, CU responded with three straight points. Kylie Barron and Jada Thomas combined for a massive block to lead 12-9.
- Cornerstone continued to dominate the net as Kylie Barron and Jada Thomas combined again for a block, and Hannah Giere joined Barron later for a third block in a seven point span.
- Cornerstone finished with four total blocks in the set as they maintained the lead the rest of the way to force a set five, 25-18.
Set Five:
- Neither team could get out to a run early in set five. The two sides traded the first seven points back-and-forth.
- CU eventually broke the back-and-forth streak scoring three straight points capped off by a Jada Thomas kill. Cornerstone led 6-3 and forced Lourdes first timeout.
- A resilient Lourdes squad would respond with back-to-back kills from Kylee McBride to tie set five at eight.
- Kylie Barron and Hannah Giere once again combined for a massive block to put CU back on top by two, 11-9. Lourdes immediately responded with two straight points to once again tie things at 11 and force Cornerstone into their first timeout.
- After each team scored one more point, CU used their second timeout with set five at 12-12.
- Lourdes scored three straight after the timeout winning the match on a service ace 15-12 in set five.

Hannah Giere led the way with a career high 14 kills.
Dyllan Hanna added a team second best and career high 12 kills.
8 –
Eliza Thelen added a career high eight blocks in the match.
15 – Cornerstone recorded a season high 15 blocks as a team tying their season high from at Lourdes in 2022.
