Second Half goal for women's soccer is the difference maker in the victory over Kalamazoo

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone finished playing nonconference opponents with a 1-0 victory over Kalamazoo. Karsyn Hostetler scored her first goal of the season that was the eventual difference maker in the victory. Kelly Leep stepped up for Cornerstone in goal with her first shutout of the season with five saves for the game. Cornerstone moves to 4-1 on the season as they head into conference play against Lourdes on Saturday, September 23 starting at 7 p.m.

First Half
  • Cornerstone came out aggressive as a pass from Gracie Gortmaker found Tori Woodwyk in the box, but the shot sailed just high in the first minute of the game.
  • The first opportunity of the game came in the 11th minute for the Hornets as the shot by Destiny Garcia was saved by the Cornerstone goalie, Kelly Leep.
  • A header in the 18th minute by Cornerstone missed just wide right as the match remains scoreless.
  • Cornerstone continues to control the game as a shot by Tori Woodwyk was just saved by the Kalamazoo's keepers foot in the 21st minute.
  • Another Tori Woodwyk shot finds the gloves of the keeper as the match remains scoreless in the 37th minute.
  • The match heads into halftime tied 0-0.
 
Second Half
  • Cornerstone had the first opportunity in the second half with a corner kick, but the defense of Kalamazoo stopped any chance the Golden Eagles had in the 53rd minute.
  • The first shot of the half for the Golden Eagles came off the foot of Arianna Rau but was saved by the keeper in the 60th minute.
  • Amber Nicholson drove through the Kalamazoo defenders and found Karsyn Hostetler as she put one right past the keeper to make it a 1-0 Cornerstone lead in the 62nd minute.
  • A foul right outside the box gave Cornerstone another opportunity but the shot by Choe Dood misses just right in the 70th minute.
  • Kalamazoo had an opportunity in the 82nd minute with a corner kick but the defense of Cornerstone stopped any opportunity for the Hornets.
  • The Hornets were pressing hard for the final five minutes but the Golden Eagles pulled off the 1-0 victory to move to 4-1 on the season.
 
By the Numbers:
9 – Cornerstone led the way with nine shots with six of those on goal
5 – Kelly Leep had five saves on the night to secure her first shutout of the season
2 – Kalamazoo had two yellow cards on the night.
