Women’s Soccer gets first WHAC win in shutout at Cleary

HOWELL, Mich.  – The Golden Eagles found the net again after two games of no goals, highlighted by a first half game winner from Myra Hunt in a 2-0 win over Cleary. Cornerstone recorded one goal in each half on the way to victory as they are now 5-2-1, 1-1-1 WHAC on the year. The CU road trip will continue at UM-Dearborn on Wednesday starting at 7 p.m.

First Half
  • Cleary got off to the threatening start against Cornerstone, recording three shots in the first five minutes. Two went just wide and the third required a key save from Morgan Scholten to keep the game scoreless. 
  • In the 16th minute, Cornerstone saw their first shots of the game. Scotland Philip recorded the first that was blocked. Amber Nicholson followed with one but would be saved by the Cougars.  
  • The Cougars then began to regain control of the first half finding offensive opportunities again. Maripaz Quiros recorded a shot in the 21stminute that was just high. 
  • The back-and-forth continued as the Golden Eagles once again went on an offensive spurt. Karsyn Hostetler found a shot on a Gracie Gortmaker corner that went wide, and Tori Woodwyk found a second shot that went wide in the 30th minute. 
  • Cornerstone was able to break through right before the half. Substitute Myra Hunt dribbled through a crowd in the 41st minute and got off a shot that beat the Cleary keeper in the bottom corner for her first collegiate goal. 
  • The Golden Eagles led 1-0 at the half. 
Second Half
  • The second half got off to a bit of a slow start with a few fouls disrupting any momentum. 
  • Gracie Gortmaker recorded the first shot of the second half with a threatening left-footed chance in the 54th minute that would miss high and wide. 
  • Moments later, Gracie Gortmaker would win the ball back off the Cleary goal kick. She then dribbled her way into the box and found the net in the 55th minute for her team leading fourth goal to make it 2-0.  
  • Cleary tried to find a response, but Morgan Scholten was a brick wall in net. She saved two more shots with just under a half hour to play to keep the Cougars scoreless. 
  • In the final 30 minutes, Cornerstone used a lot of substitutes to stay fresh and avoid any threat of a comeback. The Golden Eagles would take the match 2-0 and earn their first WHAC win of the year.

1 – Myra Hunt scored the first goal of the game and the first in her career that serves as the game winner. 
4/5 – Freshman Gracie Gortmaker has four goals this season to lead CU. She is just one away from tying Amber Nicholson's 2022 team high of five goals. 
5 – Cornerstone has five shutouts now in eight games this season. 
 
What's Next?
Cornerstone stays on the road as they travel to UM-Dearborn on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match.
