Women's Basketball breezes past Aquinas 85-70

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The snow couldn't stop women's basketballs offense as they dominated Aquinas in an 85-70 win. Cornerstone saw their biggest lead reach 28 points in the second half, thanks to a game high 20 points from Stephanie Ainsworth and 19 from Olivia Kubik. The defense of the Golden Eagles held strong, holding the to Saints 38.3% for the game while Cornerstone shot 53.3%. Cornerstone now moves to 9-6 (7-3) on the year as they head to Lawrence Tech on Wednesday, January 17 to cap off the first half of conference play.

  • First Quarter
    • A Maddison Fulks three gives Cornerstone a 7-4 lead one-minute into the game as both teams have not missed a field goal.
    • The Golden Eagles have used a 10-0 run to take a 17-7 lead over the Saints thanks to two threes from Olivia Kubik and baskets from Stephanie Ainsworth.
    • Emma Costen and a Megan Bennet layup gives Cornerstone a 22-14 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
  • Second Quarter
    • Maddison Fulks and Olivia Kubik got the scoring started for the Golden Eagles in the second quarter as Cornerstone continued to lead 27-20 through the first three minutes.
    • In her second game back, Jaxi Long scores five straight points as Stephanie Ainsworth makes her first three of the season to cap off a 14-0 Golden Eagles run to take a 41-20 lead.
    • Maddison Fulks drills another three as Jaylee Long makes a pair of free throws as the Golden Eagles lead 48-25 headed into halftime.
 
  • Third Quarter
    • Mackenzie Stien and Stephanie Ainsworth kept the scoring going for the Golden Eagles as they find themselves leading 54-32 three minutes into the third quarter.
    • Jaxi Long nails a three and Mackenzie Stien finds another basket around the rim as it continued to be all Cornerstone 59-35 with five minutes remaining in the third.
    • Stephanie Ainsworth continued to score around the rim as the Golden Eagles found themselves with their biggest lead of the game 64-36 with just under four minutes to go in the third.
    • The Saints started to up the pressure, bring a full court press as the Golden Eagles struggled to break it causing multiple turnovers. The Saints slowly chipped away at Cornerstones lead, 67-47 with 1:30 remaining.
    • Gracie Gortmaker shut down the Saints run with back-to-back layups to end the third quarter as the Golden Eagles lead 71-52.
 
  • Fourth Quarter
    • The Saints continued to bring the pressure, opening the fourth quarter on a 11-0 run to make Cornerstones lead 71-63.
    • Olivia Kubik would break the Cornerstone drought with a three pointer and Jaylee Long would follow with a three of her own next possession to give Cornerstone a 77-65 lead.
    • Olivia Kubik makes another three and Gracie Gortmaker follows that up with a layup next possession as the Golden Eagles are a minute away from a victory.
    • Cornerstone goes on to beat Aquinas, 85-70.
 
By the Numbers
26 – Cornerstone passed the ball well, totaling 26 assists on 32 made baskets.
20 – Stephanie Ainsworth led all scorers with a game high 20 points.
19 – Olivia Kubik scored 19 points, on five made threes.
