Women's Soccer falls 3-0 in tough battle with Siena Heights as offense stalls

ADRIAN, Mich.  – The Golden Eagles were unable to keep pace with Siena Heights in a tough road matchup. Cornerstone took on the second placed team in the WHAC conference but struggled to keep the ball out of their net with a 3-0 loss to the Saints. Cornerstone tallied two more total shots in the match but was not able to capitalize on their opportunities. The Golden Eagles will be back in action at home with another tough matchup against #4 Aquinas on Saturday, October 26th at 4 p.m. 

Game Recap: Cornerstone – 0 Siena Heights – 3

First Half
  • Cornerstone managed to dodge the first real attack from the Saints as Sarah Ammon hit the crossbar on a near goal opportunity in the fifth minute of the match. 
  • Gracie Gortmaker nearly found the back of the net early in the match but forced Siena Heights into the first two saves thanks to a flurry of shots in the 12th minute.
  • Only a few minutes later Morgan Scholten was called on as she saved the first attempt on goal for the Saints which kept the match scoreless in the 16th minute. 
  • Brooke Harmsen tallied back-to-back shots in the 20th minute but was unable to find the back of the net for the Golden Eagles. 
  • Sarah Ammon scored the first goal of the match for the Saints in the 27th minute which gave them the early 1-0 lead. 
  • Siena Heights doubled their lead with a goal from Madalyn Freitas in the 42nd minute of the match. 
  • Cornerstone outshot Siena Heights 8-6 in the first half yet they trailed 2-0 at the break. 
Second Half
  • The second half started off slowly as both teams looked to control the possession of the ball as Cornerstone continued to trail 2-0.
  • Tori Woodwyk looked to get the Golden Eagles back in the game with a shot that sailed just wide in the 55th minute of the match. 
  • Cornerstone earned a corner kick in the 60th minute of the match that connected with the head of Arianna Brooks, but her header was saved by the Saints. 
  • The Saints found the back of the net for the third time in the match thanks to a goal from Maddie Morris off a corner kick in the 64th minute. 
  • Cornerstone continued to outshoot the Saints 12-10 in the match yet had no goals to show for it. 
  • The match finished with a score of 3-0 which gave Siena Heights the victory.

4 – Both teams tallied four corner kicks in the match. 
3 – Siena Heights scored three goals in the match off three different goal scorers. 
12 – The Golden Eagles had 12 shots compared to the Saints 10 in the match.
