Women’s Soccer pulls off heroic defensive effort to end the Saints 13-game winning streak

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – The Golden Eagles took on the #4 team in the NAIA in Aquinas who entered the matchup on a 13-game winning streak. Cornerstone battled their way to an incredible 0-0 draw against the Saints which felt like a massive win for the Golden Eagles. Morgan Scholten led the way for Cornerstone with six crucial saves in the match. The Golden Eagles will be back in action for their last regular season matchup against Madonna on Wednesday, October 30th at 6 p.m. to celebrate their Senior Night. 

Game Recap: Cornerstone – 0 Aquinas – 0

First Half
  • Cornerstone weathered the first storm from Aquinas after they kept the first four shots from the Saints out of their net which kept the match level at the ten-minute mark. 
  • Morgan Scholten was called on to make the first save of the match in the 15th minute of the match for the Golden Eagles. 
  • Alaina Kregel placed a perfect cross into the box in the 24th minute but was unable to connect with Gracie Gortmaker for the goal which left the match at 0-0 still. 
  • Gracie Gortmaker committed an aggressive foul in the 30th minute of the match and earned a yellow card from the challenge.
  • Cornerstone's defense continued to stand strong as they reached halftime with the score at 0-0. 
Second Half
  • The second half began quickly for the Saints with a couple of quick shots, but Morgan Scholten continued her stellar performance with a couple more saves in the first five minutes of the half. 
  • The match began to get chippy between the two teams which led to multiple yellow cards handed out to the Saints. 
  • Cornerstone took control of the ball later in the second half which led to heavy pressure in the Aquinas half in the 75th minute. 
  • Jada VanNoord had the crowd on the edge of their seats in the 88th minute after she faced a one-on-one with the keeper but dragged her shot just left and the Saints were bailed out and kept the match scoreless. 
  • The match finished 0-0 which was an incredible result earned by the Golden Eagles. 
By the Numbers
6 – Morgan Scholten made six saves in the match to earn the shutout. 
18 – Aquinas took 18 shots in the match compared to the Golden Eagles two. 
 
What's Next?
Cornerstone stays at home for their last regular season matchup of the season against Madonna on Wednesday, October 30th at 6 p.m. to celebrate their Senior Night.
