GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Women's Basketball started their 2024-25 season with a matchup against Spring Arbor that saw them fall 86-71. The press of Spring Arbor was tough and chaotic as it led to Cornerstone turning the ball over 24 time for the game.
Jaxi Long led the way for Cornerstone with a team high 17 points and five rebounds. Women's Basketball will be back in action next week Friday, November 1 as they take on #22 Saint Francis (Ind.) on the road.
Game Recap: Spring Arbor – 86 Cornerstone - 71
First Quarter – Cornerstone – 22 Spring Arbor - 21
- The first points of the 2024-25 season belonged to Olivia Kubik as she makes a free throw.
- Spring Arbor scored the next four points to take a 4-1 lead over the Golden Eagles.
- Olivia Kubik made the first three of the year for the Golden Eagles to tie it at four.
- A Jaxi Long three and a Laura Innerebner layup gave the Golden Eagles a 9-6 lead with just under seven to go in the first.
- Cornerstone was hot from three as one from Jaylee Long made it 15-13 with three to go in the first.
- The Golden Eagles found their largest lead of the first as Mackenzie Goodwin makes a layup to make it 19-13.
- Cornerstone leads 22-21 after the end of the first quarter.
Second Quarter – Spring Arbor – 38 Cornerstone – 33
- Layups from Emma Costen and Laura Innerebner got the offense started in the second quarter as the Golden Eagles lead 26-21.
- A 7-0 run by Spring Arbor saw them take a 30-26 lead with just over five-minutes to go in the second quarter.
- Olivia Kubik ended the drought for the Golden Eagles with a three to make it 31-29 with 3:30 to go.
- Spring Arbor continued to hold off Cornerstone as layup made it 36-31 with under a minute to go in the first half.
- Stephanie Ainsworth scored a tough basket, but Spring Arbors responds with one of their own to head in halftime with a 38-33 lead.
Third Quarter – Spring Arbor – 58 Cornerstone – 51
- Mackenzie Goodwin scored three straight points to get the offense started in the third quarter.
- A 6-0 run by the Cougars sees them extend their lead 48-39 with 5:38 to go in the third.
- The Long sisters of Jaxi and Jaylee Long scored back-to-back for the Golden Eagles to make it 49-43.
- The press affected the Golden Eagles down the stretch in the final minute of the third as Spring Arbor went on a small run to head into the final quarter with a 58-51 lead.
Fourth Quarter – Spring Arbor – 86 Cornerstone – 71
- An Olivia Kubik three cuts Spring Arbor's lead to four as it is 58-54 at the start of the fourth.
- Spring Arbor would respond with a quick 9-0 run to extend their lead back to double-digits 67-54 with 6:19 to go.
- Turnovers led to easy points for Spring Arbor as the Golden Eagles were forced to call a timeout as they are down 75-60.
- The Cougars have their largest lead of the game as another layup made it 80-60 with 2:51 to go.
- Julie Ashbaugh and Laura Innerbner found easy points around the rim after they broke down the Spring Arbor press.
- Spring Arbor takes the first game of the year over the Golden Eagles 86-71.
