Women’s Basketball falls just short in double overtime matchup against Grace

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Basketball was faced with an electric matchup against Grace College that was sent to double overtime to decide a winner. The Lancers were able to hang on late and secured a 102-100 victory thanks to multiple 30-point performances. The Golden Eagles were led by Laura Innerebner who posted a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds in the game. Jaxi Long scored 24 points in the contest as well as she knocked down five three pointers in the game. The Golden Eagles next test begins with WHAC conference play as they take on Rochester Christian at home for the annual Pack the House event on Wednesday, November 20 at 5:30 p.m. 
 
Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 100 Grace - 102
 
First Quarter
  • Olivia Kubik found the first bucket of the game off a smooth mid-range jumper that gave the Golden Eagles the lead. 
  • Jaxi Long drilled a deep three pointer for Cornerstone as the shot clock expired which gave the home team the 7-4 lead with seven minutes left in the first quarter.
  • Stephanie Ainsworth block turned defense to offense and ignited Olivia Kubik as she knocked down back-to-back three pointers on the next two possessions which gave Cornerstone the 15-10 lead. 
  • Olivia Kubik continued to use her hot hand and knocked down her third three pointer of the first quarter that extended the Golden Eagles lead to 18-12 with three minutes left on the clock. 
  • The Lancers began to find some buckets of their own and rallied back to take a 19-18 lead as two minutes remained in the quarter. 
  • Laura Innerebner gritty offensive rebound led to a Jaylee Long three pointer for the Golden Eagles which gave them back the lead at 22-19 with only a minute left on the clock. 
  • Mackenzie Goodwin capped off a strong Golden Eagles first quarter with another strong bucket at the rim which gave Cornerstone the 24-20 lead over the Lancers.
Second Quarter
  • Grace started the second quarter strong with two quick buckets, but the Golden Eagles did not bend as Laura Innerebner scored two buckets at the rim which gave the lead back to Cornerstone at 28-27. 
  • Jaxi Long battled her way into the paint and finished the bucket and the foul to give Cornerstone the three point play and followed it up the next possession with a corner three that extended the lead for the Golden Eagles 34-27 with six minutes left on the clock. 
  • Emma Costen dropped a dime in the paint to give Laura Innerebner the easy bucket and Cornerstone added to their lead at 38-33 as three minutes remained in the second quarter. 
  • The Lancers continued to inch their way back into the game and found their success at the free throw line as they only trailed by one with 30 seconds left on the clock. 
  • Jaylee Long three pointer at the buzzer was added to her highlight reel as she gave Cornerstone the 41-37 lead at halftime. 
Third Quarter
  • Laura Innerebner and Mackenzie Goodwin started the block party early in the third quarter as both ladies found blocks that maintained the Cornerstone lead. 
  • Mackenzie Goodwin found back-to-back buckets at the rim to give Cornerstone a four-point advantage with eight minutes left in the third quarter.
  • The Lancers continued to stick around as they tied the game at 45-45 with five minutes left in the contest. 
  • Grace found back-to-back three pointers that gave them their largest lead of the game at 53-47 with three minutes on the clock in the third quarter. 
  • Cornerstone picked up the pace with Mackenzie Goodwin as she found two buckets on fast breaks for the Golden Eagles that cut the lead to 55-51. 
  • The Lancers broke down the Golden Eagles defense to close out the quarter with a bucket that extended their lead to 61-53. 
Fourth Quarter
  • The Lancers began to build a hefty lead over the Golden Eagles after a hot start to the quarter as they had a 68-55 advantage with eight minutes left in the game. 
  • The Cornerstone offense ignited thanks to a Jaxi Long takeover as she knocked down two three pointers and a layup in a 10-0 Golden Eagles run as the ladies only trailed by three points with six minutes left to play. 
  • Laura Innerebner put six points on the board quickly for Cornerstone as they rallied back to make the game 72-71 and only trailed by one point. 
  • Stephanie Ainsworth managed to draw a foul late but could not tie the game as her free throws bounced in and out of the rim as Grace still led by one point with 20 seconds left on the clock.
  • Jaxi Long knocked down a three pointer when it mattered most and tied the game at 74-74 with five seconds left on the clock. 
  • Grace pushed the ball quickly and managed to find another bucket with one second left on the clock. 
  • Coach Yonkers called a timeout and put together the perfect play as Stephanie Ainsworth scored off the glass at the buzzer to tie the game at 76-76 to send the game to overtime.
First Overtime 
  • Jaylee Long found Olvia Kubik for a massive three pointer to start the overtime period. 
  • The Lancers went on an eight-point run to flip the score which gave Grace the 85-81 lead with two minutes left to play. 
  • Olivia Kubik posted two more buckets in the paint, but the Golden Eagles still trailed by two points in the game with 45 seconds left to play. 
  • The Golden Eagles forced the Lancers into a five second violation on an inbound that gave the ball back to Cornerstone which Mackenzie Goodwin converted into two made free throws to tie the game at 87-87. 
  • The Golden Eagles defense forced chaos in the Lancers half and Grace was unable to put up a shot before the time expired which sent the game to the second overtime. 
Second Overtime
  • Mackenzie Goodwin found another bucket for the Golden Eagles that tied the game back up at 89-89 with four minutes left in the second overtime period. 
  • Grace found back-to-back buckets to give them a four-point advantage at 93-89 with three minutes left to play.
  • Jaylee Long knocked down two clutch free throws and a smooth jumper off the glass to tie the game back at 93 a piece. 
  • The Lancers answered right back with another bucket but Jaylee Long knocked down a deep three pointer for Cornerstone as they led 96-95.
  • Grace completed a 5-0 run to give themselves a 100-96 lead with 30 seconds left in the game. 
  • Cornerstone refused to break in the game as they answered back with buckets from Stephanie Ainsworth and Emma Costen to bring the Grace lead down to two points with 5 seconds left on the clock. 
  • The Golden Eagles fell just short in a dramatic finish to the game as the score was 102-100 at the final buzzer in favor of Grace. 
By the Numbers 
Double-doubles – Laura Innerebner posted a double-double behind her 14 points and 15 rebounds. Mackenzie Goodwin also posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. 
12 – There were 12 lead changes throughout the game in the back-and-forth contest. 
23 – Cornerstone tallied 23 offensive rebounds compared to Grace's 15. 
11 – The Golden Eagles blocked 11 shots throughout the game.

Cornerstone stays at home next for their annual Pack the House event against Rochester Christian on Wednesday, November 20th for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
