Lawrence Tech spoils Women's Volleyballs postseason run in the WHAC Quarterfinal Match

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Women's Volleyball welcomed back Lawrence Tech for the WHAC Quarterfinal round and found themselves down early, forcing their way back to a fifth set, but falling short as the Blue Devils take the Quarterfinal match 3-2. The Golden Eagles struggled in the first two sets, finding themselves hitting just .070 before picking it up in the next two sets to force that fifth and final set. Senior Aubrey Lenz left all on the court as she had a match high 55 assists, 11 digs, six blocks and three aces along with Kylie Barron who had 15 kills and seven blocks. This loss concludes the 2024 season for women's volleyball as they finish with a 20-11 overall record.

Game Recap: Lawrence Tech – 3 Cornerstone – 2 (22-25, 13-25, 25-19, 25-21, 12-15)
 
First Set: Lawrence Tech – 25 Cornerstone - 22
  • The Golden Eagles and Blue Devils battled to open the first set as a kill from Lawrence Tech tied it at three.
  • The Blue Devils took advantage of some Golden Eagles errors and a kill to take a 9-6 advantage over Cornerstone.
  • A kill from Aubrey Johnson and a service ace from Aubrey Lenz tied the set at nine.
  • The Golden Eagles were forced to a call a timeout as a 4-0 run highlighted by back-to-back blocks from Lawrence Tech saw them take a 13-9 lead.
  • The blocks continued to stack up for Lawrence Tech as two back-to-back from the Blue Devils forced Cornerstone into their final timeout as they trail 17-10.
  • Right out of the timeout, the Golden Eagles used a 4-0 run thanks to kills from Kylie Barron and Emmalee Murphy to force Lawrence Tech into a timeout as they made it 17-14.
  • The Blue Devils calmed the Golden Eagle storm as they lead late 22-16.
  • Late kills from Gabby VerBerkmoes and Jada Thomas closed in on Lawrence Tech 24-22 but the Blue Devils found the final kill to take a 25-22 set one victory.
 
Second Set: Lawrence Tech – 25 Cornerstone - 13
  • Lawrence Tech jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, but Kylie Barron ended the Blue Devil run with a kill.
  • After a long back-and-forth rally with big saves from the Golden Eagles, Lawrence Tech found a kill to take a 7-4 advantage.
  • Cornerstone was forced into a timeout as three straight errors saw their deficit grow to 11-6.
  • The Blue Devils continued to put the pressure on the Golden Eagles as they lead 18-9 as Cornerstone was forced into their final timeout.
  • Lawrence Tech dominated from the start in the second set as they take a 2-0 advantage with a 25-13
 
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lawrence Tech - 19
  • A kill from Kylie Barron gave the Golden Eagles an early 3-2 lead.
  • The Golden Eagles came out angry as they forced Lawrence Tech into a timeout as they lead 8-3 thanks to a kill and block from Aubrey Lenz.
  • It continued to be all Cornerstone early in the third set as back-to-back Aubrey Johnson kills made it 12-5.
  • A huge save from Aubrey Lenz led to a Kylie Barron kill that forced Lawrence Tech into their final timeout as the Golden Eagles lead 15-8.
  • Lawrence Tech has started to slowly chip away at the Golden Eagle lead as a couple kills made it 16-12.
  • The Golden Eagles would respond nicely as kills from Aubrey Lenz and Aubrey Johnson made it 20-14.
  • Lawrence Tech has continued to stick around as the set remains in favor of Cornerstone 23-19, but the Golden Eagles call a timeout to regroup.
  • Cornerstone forced a fourth set thanks to a service ace from Aubrey Johnson as they win the third set 25-19.
 
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lawrence Tech - 21
  • The fourth opened in a close contest as a kill from Jada Thomas made it 3-3.
  • It continued to stay close as kills from Emmalee Murphy and Aubrey Johnson made it 7-7.
  • It remained a back-and-forth battle as a kill from Gabby Verberkmoes and service ace from Aubrey Johnson made it 11-11.
  • The Golden Eagles started to find some momentum as an attack error from Lawrence Tech and a kill from Kylie Barron made it 15-13.
  • Lawrence Tech called the first timeout of the set as the Golden Eagles continued to lead 17-15 thanks to a kill from Emmalee Murphy.
  • A block from Aubrey Lenz and Gabby VerBerkmoes led to a kill by VerBerkmoes and Aubrey Johnson that forced Lawrence Tech into their final timeout as they lead 21-16.
  • Lawrence Tech won't back down so easy as two quick points make it 23-19 late as the Golden Eagles call a timeout to regroup.
  • The match isn't done yet as the Golden Eagles showed no quit as they force a fifth and final set after a fourth set 25-21 victory.
 
Fifth Set: Lawrence Tech – 15 Cornerstone - 12
  • The fifth set started on a quick 2-0 Golden Eagle run thanks to a service ace from Aubrey Lenz and a kill from Aubrey Johnson.
  • Lawrence Tech responded nicely with a 4-1 run to take a 4-3 lead over Cornerstone.
  • A net aided kill from Aubrey Lenz and then a block by Lenz and Kylie Barron gave Cornerstone a 6-5 advantage.
  • At the halfway switch, the Blue Devils lead the Golden Eagles 8-7.
  • The Golden Eagles call their first timeout of the fifth set as a long rally favored the Blue Devils in the end as Lawrence Tech leads 10-8.
  • Lawrence Tech is three points away from a fifth set victory as their kill made it 12-9.
  • The Golden Eagles won't back down as kills from Aubrey Johnson and Gabby VerBerkmoes made it 13-11 as Lawrence Tech called a timeout.
  • The Blue Devils spoil the Golden Eagles postseason run with a 15-12 upset victory.
