The comeback falls short as #13 Huntington chops down Men's Basketball 82-78

HUNTINGTON, Ind. – Cornerstone and Huntington matched up for the first time since the 2016-17 season and the two tough teams battled all 40-minutes with the Foresters chopping down the Golden Eagles 82-78. Cornerstone battled back from down 17 to eventually leading by three in the second half but Huntington made keys baskets down the stretch to escape with the victory. Luke Rowlinson led the way with 18 for the Golden Eagles as men's basketball falls to 2-3 on the year as they return home to face off against #RV Rochester Christian on Wednesday, November 20 for Pack the House to open conference season.

First Half: Huntington - 47 - Cornerstone - 38
  • Huntington and Cornerstone battled defensively to open the game as a Luke Rowlinson basket made it 2-2 through the first two-minutes.
  • The Foresters have found their offensive touch as a 9-0 run sees them extend their lead 15-5 over the Golden Eagles as Cornerstone called a timeout to regroup.
  • Kayden Bird makes the first three of the game and Blake Stewart follows that with a layup to make it 21-12 with 12:30 left in the half.
  • Huntington continued to hold onto a 10-point lead over the Golden Eagles as it is now 27-17.
  • A 7-0 run by the Foresters sees them double the Cornerstone point total as they now lead 34-17.
  • Cornerstone would respond with a 7-0 run of their own to cut it back to 10 thanks to threes from Tanner Wiegerink and Mason Brooks.
  • Huntington and Cornerstone continued to score as back-to-back Luke Rowlinson baskets made it 41-30 Foresters with just under three minutes to go in the half.
  • Kayden Bird and Mason Brooks made threes down the stretch for the Golden Eagles but Huntington like they have all first half, made a jumper before the halftime buzzer to make it 47-38.
  • The offense of Huntington has made tough baskets all first half as they shot 54.5% with the Golden Eagles at 43.3%.
 
Second Half: Huntington - 82 Cornerstone - 78
  • The Golden Eagles came out of the half ready to play as a 7-2 run cut into Huntington's lead 49-45 thanks to baskets from Mason Brooks, Eli Steffen, and Tanner Wiegerink.
  • Defense leads to offense as the Golden Eagle defense has sped up the Foresters as a Toby Woolcock layup made it a two-point game 51-49.
  • Luke Rowlinson scored eight straight points for the Golden Eagles with two deep threes to give the Golden Eagles their first lead of the game, 59-56 at the 15-minute media timeout.
  • Huntington scored four straight points to take a 60-59 lead but a block at the rim by Connor Dykema led to a Toby Woolcock fastbreak layup to make it 61-60 with under 10 to go in the half.
  • The defense continued to pick up on both sides but a 5-2 Huntington run sees them take a 65-63 lead.
  • Back-to-back huge Huntington threes finds the Golden Eagles in 71-63 hole with five-minutes to go in the game.
  • Cornerstone continued to battle as a 6-2 run sees them cut into the Foresters lead 73-69 with 3:49 left.
  • Lane Sparks of Huntington pulled up and made two big jumpers for Huntington, but Mason Brooks answered with a three to make it 79-74.
  • After two made free throws by Luke Rowlinson, the Foresters lead 79-76 with one-minute left in the game.
  • Mason Brooks nails a three to make it 80-79 but it doesn't count as the Golden Eagles call a timeout before the shot got off. Cornerstone trails 80-76 with 16.6 seconds left.
  • Cornerstone couldn't find the needed score down the stretch as Huntington would knock down their free throws to escape with a 82-78 victory.
