LIVONIA, Mich. – Women's Basketball traveled to Madonna for their first road conference game of the year and came away with a victory 71-59 in a back-and-forth battle. The Long sisters of
Jaylee Long and
Jaxi Long led the way for women's basketball with 16 and 15 points to pace the offense. The defense of the Golden Eagles stepped up in the second half as they held Madonna to just 26 points. Women's Basketball improves to 3-5 (2-0) on the year as they remain on the road as they take on Michigan-Dearborn on Wednesday, December 4 at 5:30 p.m.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 71 Madonna - 59
First Quarter – Madonna – 19 Cornerstone – 17
- Olivia Kubik got the offense started for the Golden Eagles with five quick points to give the Golden Eagles an early 5-2 lead.
- Jaylee Long would nail back-to-back threes for Cornerstone to make it 11-2 as Madonna called their first timeout of the game to regroup.
- The Crusaders have slowly started to chip away at the Golden Eagles lead as an 8-2 run made it 13-10 Cornerstone with 4:29 to go in the first quarter.
- Jaxi Long would score four straight for the Golden Eagles to break the drought to make it 17-10.
- Cornerstone was held scoreless for the final three minutes of the first quarter as Madonna leads 19-17 after one.
Second Quarter – Madonna – 33 Cornerstone – 31
- Jaylee Long continued to have a hot hand early as her third three of the first half gave Cornerstone a 21-19 lead over Madonna through the first two and half minutes of the second quarter.
- Madonna would respond with back-to-back threes as they retook the lead 25-21 over the Golden Eagles.
- The defense of Madonna forced a 30-second shot clock violation as the Golden Eagles struggled to find a flow on offense.
- Emma Costen ended the drought for the Golden Eagles with a layup to make it 30-27 Madonna with three minutes to go.
- Off the free throw miss, Abby Hall would nail a corner three to give Cornerstone a 31-30 advantage.
- A jumper right before the buzzer saw Madonna retake the lead at half 33-31 as the game continued to go back-and-forth through the first 20-minutes.
Third Quarter – Cornerstone – 53 Madonna – 47
- Laura Innerebner and Jaxi Long started the offense for the Golden Eagles to open the second half with baskets.
- A pair of Jaxi Long free throws tied the game at 41 with 5:49 to go in the third quarter.
- Emma Costen would give the Golden Eagles a 45-44 lead over the Crusaders, but Madonna would answer next possession with a three to retake the lead 47-45.
- The Golden Eagles close the third quarter on a 8-0 run thanks to a three from Jaylee Long and five points from Olivia Kubik to take a 53-47 lead into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter – Cornerstone – 71 Madonna - 59
- Julie Ashbaugh fought for the offensive rebound and was rewarded with two free throws as those makes made it 55-49 through the first minute of the fourth quarter.
- The Golden Eagle defense has held Madonna to two points through the first three minutes of the fourth quarter as a Jaxi Long floater made it 57-49.
- Cornerstone continued to frustrate the Crusaders with their defense as they are still at two points through the first five-minutes of the fourth as Mackenzie Goodwin grabbed the offensive board and scored to make it 62-49.
- Another Mackenzie Goodwin layup made it 65-53 Cornerstone with just over two-minutes to go in the fourth quarter.
- The Golden Eagles hold Madonna to under 40% from the field as they take down the Crusaders 71-59.
