Women’s Basketball sees victory over Michigan-Dearborn taking them to 3-0 in the WHAC conference

DEARBORN, Mich. – Women's Basketball had no problem on the road as they cruised past Michigan-Dearborn 79-53. Jaxi Long highlighted the matchup with 20 points, 7 assists, and 6 rebounds which paved the way for the Golden Eagles. Cornerstone also saw Mackenzie Goodwin post a strong performance with 13 points and 7 rebounds. This result brought Cornerstone to 3-0 in the WHAC conference as they head into another conference matchup this weekend. The ladies will take on Defiance on Saturday, December 7th for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff.  

Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 79 Michigan-Dearborn – 53

First Quarter
  • Jaylee Long got hot quick as she utilized the fast-paced start with back-to-back buckets for the Golden Eagles to make it 4-2 only a minute into the game. 
  • Cornerstone continued to use their speed down the floor as they forced Michigan-Dearborn into a timeout after a six-point run thanks to buckets from Emma Costen, Jaxi Long, and Olivia Kubik which gave them a 10-4 lead. 
  • Emma Costen added another bucket for the Golden Eagles as she tallied a quick five points and extended the Cornerstone lead to 13-6 with five minutes left to play in the first quarter. 
  • Olivia Kubik dropped a dime for Jaxi Long as she drilled a deep three pointer which gave the Golden Eagles a 12-point advantage. 
  • Laura Innerebner got her name in the scorer's book later in the first quarter with a strong bucket at the rim to extend the lead to 22-6. 
  • The Wolverines refused to give up as they ended the first quarter on a 6-2 run to cut into the Cornerstone lead. 
  • Cornerstone led the Wolverines 28-14 at the end of the first period. 
Second Quarter
  • Mackenzie Goodwin struck first in the second quarter with a smooth drive and finish at the rim to give Cornerstone a 30-14 lead. 
  • Michigan-Dearborn capitalized with a strong four-point run thanks to strong offensive rebounding which forced coach Yonkers into a timeout as their lead was cut to 12 points. 
  • The Wolverines capped off another two strong possessions with buckets to make the score 30-23 with six minutes left to play in the half. 
  • Mackenzie Goodwin and Olivia Kubik found back-to-back three pointers which were much needed as both teams began to lose momentum on the offensive side of the ball as Cornerstone led 38-27 with three minutes left on the clock.
  • Jaxi Long found another pair of buckets on her solo four-point run which extended the Golden Eagles lead to 42-29. 
  • Stephanie Ainsworth capped off the second quarter with a layup that gave Cornerstone a 15-point advantage as they headed into the halftime break. 
 
Third Quarter
  • Olivia Kubik kicked off the scoring in the second half with another three-point jumper for the Golden Eagles. 
  • Cornerstone jumped out to a 7-0 run start to the third quarter with buckets from Jaylee Long and Mackenzie Goodwin which gave Cornerstone the 51-29 lead with eight minutes left to play in the third quarter. 
  • Laura Innerebner found an easy two off an offensive rebound which extended the Golden Eagles lead to 22-points with five minutes left to play in the quarter. 
  • Steal and coast to coast drive by Jaxi Long turned into two made free throws at the line as she tallied her 17th point of the game which gave the Golden Eagles a 61-37 lead. 
  • Jaxi Long continued to lead the Cornerstone squad with another three pointer that forced Michigan-Dearborn into a timeout as one minute remained in the third quarter. 
  • Julie Ashbaugh extended the lead before the third quarter buzzer for the Golden Eagles as they led 66-43. 
Fourth Quarter
  • Stephanie Ainsworth got the Golden Eagles offense started in the fourth with back-to-back buckets that gave Cornerstone the 70-45 lead with eight minutes left to play. 
  • Michigan-Dearborn went on a four-point run as they cut the Golden Eagles lead to 21-points with six minutes on the clock. 
  • Laura Innerebner found another basket for Cornerstone that gave them a 24-point lead at 73-49 with four minutes left to play. 
  • Abby Hall added her name to the scoreboard with a strong bucket as Cornerstone continued to cruise in the matchup. 
  • Julie Ashbaugh picked off a Wolverine pass and took it the distance of the floor for an easy two which extended the Cornerstone lead to 27-points with two minutes left to play. 
  • Kylie Heck added another bucket for the Golden Eagles late in the fourth quarter with less than two minutes left to play. 
  • The Golden Eagles finished the game with a 79-53 victory that kept their undefeated WHAC record intact. 
By the Numbers 
1 – The game had one lead change which came early for the Golden Eagles that they refused to give up for the remainder of the contest.
50% – The Golden Eagles shot 50% from the field compared to the Wolverines 32.3%. 
20 – Jaxi Long led the way in scoring with 20 points in the game.

Cornerstone returns home for their next game, which is another favorable matchup against Defiance on Saturday, December 7th for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff.
