Softball ends their weekend in the dome with another split

DAVENPORT, Iowa. – Softball wrapped up a four-game weekend with another split today. Cornerstone opened their day with a 4-0 victory over College of Saint Mary, thanks to a bases clearing double from Morgan Jenkins, and finished their day with a tough 3-1 loss to Culver-Stockton. The pitching has been a bright spot for the Golden Eagles, as they have not allowed more than three runs in the first four games behind nine strong innings from Alyssa Braam. Jolie Groeneveld collected four more hits today for the Golden Eagles as she is batting .429 to open the year. Softball will be back in action in the warm state of Florida for their next set of games, starting on Sunday, March 3 against Mount Mary.

Game One Highlights – Cornerstone – 4 College of Saint Mary– 0

  • Cornerstone opened the second inning with back-to-back singles from Moriah Sprague and Maddy Chatman but were later stranded on the bases as the Golden Eagles could not get them home.
  • Through the first three innings of the game, Cornerstone and Saint Mary remain tied 0-0.
  • Dylan Holmes would get hit by the pitch and later steal second to get the top of the fifth going for the Golden Eagles. Jolie Groeneveld would come through with a single that would score Holmes, the first run of the game as the Golden Eagles lead 1-0. Alyssa Braam enters the game to pitch for Cornerstone and works a quick 1-2-3 inning to end the fifth.

  • Alyssa Braam closes the door on the first game of the day with a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts to give Cornerstone the 4-0 victory over Saint Mary.

Game Two Highlights – Culver-Stockton – 3 Cornerstone – 1
  • Cornerstone had a prime opportunity to get multiple runs in the second inning but squandered a one-out base loaded opportunity to keep the game tied at zero.
  • Culver-Stockton had an opportunity of their own in the bottom of the second with runners on second and third and one out. They would line into an inning ending double-play thanks to play of Jolie Groeneveld and Dylan Holmes.
  • Culver-Stockton opened the third inning with back-to-back singles. They would score the first run of the game thanks to a Cornerstone error as there remains two runners on and one out in the inning. The next two batters would get a run home as Culver-Stockton put up a three spot in the third inning. They lead 3-0.
  • An Abbey Brower single puts runners on first and third with no outs for the Golden Eagles as Jolie Groeneveld comes through with an RBI single to get Cornerstone on the board. Cornerstone would later strand runners on second and third, missing on their opportunity to tie the game as they still trail 3-1 after the fifth inning.
