Indiana Tech spoils undefeated run; takes down Men's Volleyball in four sets

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Indiana Tech handed No. 13 Cornerstone their first set loss at home tonight and eventually handed them their first match loss as the visiting Warriors defeated Cornerstone 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-19). The setback drops CU to 10-1 on the year and 6-1 in league action as the Golden Eagles will close out the home weekend with a 12 p.m. contest on Saturday against Lourdes.

Match Recap – #RV Indiana Tech 3, #13 Cornerstone 1

  • Set One
    • The two teams traded points for the most part until an Ernest Broaster kill followed a Hubert Sliwinski kill to put CU up 6-4
    • Back to back kills from Broaster and Landon Waltz gave CU a 12-9 lead and they upped that margin to five at 16-11 after an ace from Patrick Voloch
    • After a timeout from the Warriors, the visitors then took five of the next six points to get within one at 17-16
    • The Golden Eagles called their own timeout and proceeded to score the next four with kills from Andrew Galanes and Waltz, an ace from Kyi Jagorin and a block from Galanes
    • Set one was finished off with a kill from Josh Beaumont and a bad set from the Warriors with CU taking the victory 25-19
  • Set Two
    • Indiana Tech came out strong in the second set, scoring the first three points
    • CU rallied and scored eight of the next eleven to take their first lead at 7-6 after back to back terminations from David Galanes and Beaumont and the rally continued with a big swing from Galanes again
    • The Golden Eagles would maintain that two point lead at 14-12 but the Warriors took control with an 8-3 run forcing CU into a timeout trailing 20-17
    • Cornerstone got to within two on three different occasions but the Warriors stellar passing down the stretch propelled them to the 25-22 win

  • Set Three
    • In the pivotal third set, neither team would budge for the first 10 points as the largest lead either team could muster was two (by CU at 3-1).
    • With the score tied 10-10, CU scored five of the next six points to take a 15-11 lead. The run was capped off by a Patrick Voloch ace
    • That lead grew to 20-15 on a David Galanes kill and it looked as if CU would take a commanding 2-1 lead
    • Indiana Tech then clawed their way back in and used an 8-1 run to take the 23-21 lead
    • Cornerstone hung tough and thanks to kills from Broaster (2) and Voloch, knotted it at 24 all
    • A missed serve by CU gave IT the 25-24 lead and then the Warriors finished off CU after a bad set
  • Set Four
    • The fourth set resembled the third for the first 20 points with teams trading side outs on excellent offensive firepower
    • With the score tied at 18 all, Indiana Tech had a couple of huge defensive plays to keep rallies alive and they scored two straight to force CU into a timeout
    • A David Galanes kill brought CU to within one but the Warriors made too many key plays down the stretch to win going away 25-19
