GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone returned home for the first time in the 2024 season and came away with a split against St. Francis. The Saints got the best of the Golden Eagles in game with a 10-0 victory, but Softball would answer with a 2-0 victory in game two thanks to a complete game from
McKenna Gilde.
Jolie Groeneveld led the way hitting for Cornerstone with three hits as the Golden Eagles move to 9-9 on the season. They will be right back in action tomorrow with a double header against Judson starting at 2 p.m.
Game One Highlights – St. Francis – 10 Cornerstone – 0
- The bats of St. Francis and Cornerstone have remained quiet after two scoreless innings of softball.
- St. Francis opened the third inning with a homerun to left to take a 1-0 lead. With two outs in the inning, the Saints came through with a two RBI double to extend their lead 3-0. The next batter would bring her home with the second homerun of the inning to take a 5-0 lead after the third inning.
- St. Francis tacked on one more in the fourth inning with another double to take a 6-0 lead.
- Jolie Groeneveld and Moriah Sprague had hits for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the fourth but were not able to score as the game remains 6-0.
- Three of the first four batters reached for the Saints in the fifth inning to score another run, making it 7-0. After an error and a few more balls put in play, St. Francis leads 10-0 after the top of the fifth.
- Last chance for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the fifth inning as they were not able to bring home a run after Taylor Zwagerman had a one out single. Cornerstone falls in game one 10-0.
Game Two Highlights – Cornerstone – 2 St. Francis - 0
- Just like game one, the bats of Cornerstone and St. Francis has remained silent as the game is scoreless after two innings.
- McKkenna Gilde worked around a little bit of traffic in the fourth inning to keep St. Francis off the board to keep the game tied.
- Jolie Groeneveld opened the fourth with a single up the middle to get the offense going. Alexis Ashbay brought her home with a fielder's choice to give Cornerstone a 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles would score one more thanks to an RBI double from Taylor Zwagerman to make it 2-0 after the fourth inning.
- McKenna Gilde continues to dominate in the circle as she is through six innings of scoreless pitching.
- Cornerstone had traffic in the bottom of the sixth but was not able to capitalize as they continue to lead 2-0 heading into the final inning.
- McKenna Gilde finished the complete game to give Cornerstone the game two victory 2-0 over the Saints to salvage a split.
