Joshua Beaumont saw the third and final set come to a close 25-19. Up next for the Golden Eagles, Cornerstone University will remain on home turf for another WHAC matchup against Bethel University Pilots who are 6-9 overall and 1-7 in conference play this Saturday (Mar. 23) at 3 p.m. for Senior Night.
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 3 Goshen – 0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-19)
Set 1
- Set one gets underway with a backrow kill by David Galanes, the Golden Eagles lead 1-0.
- The out of system set finds its way to Ernest Broaster who rolls it over the block to put Cornerstone up 3-0.
- Joshua Beaumont takes advantage of a perfect quick backset from Patrick Voloch to keep the Golden Eagles in front of the Maple Leafs 6-3.
- Andrew Galanes's service ace forces the Maple Leafs into their first timeout of the set. The score of set one is 10-4 Cornerstone.
- Some scrappy defense from Goshen sees them begin to close the gap. The Maple Leafs still trail 11-7.
- A kill and block from David Galanes keeps Cornerstone in the lead 17-12.
- The backrow kills keep on coming from the Golden Eagles, as Ernest Broaster makes it 21-15 for Cornerstone.
- Joshua Beaumont grabs a kill off a knee set by Patrick Voloch to end the first set for the Golden Eagles 25-18.
Set 2
- Set two begins with a kill off the block from the Goshen Maple Leafs, but it is followed by a kill from Joshua Beaumont to tie the set 1-1.
- Set two stays close with a hitting error from the Maple Leafs, to keep the set tied 3-3.
- The block party is here to stay from Goshen College. As they get two blocks in a row to take a three-point lead early on; the score is 7-3.
- While the blocks keep coming from Goshen, the backrow attacks can't stop for the Golden Eagles as Ernest Broaster grabs another kill on the night. Cornerstone still trail 8-5.
- Two attack errors in a row from Goshen see their lead diminish a bit, but they still lead 13-11.
- David Galanes kills the ball through the block to force Goshen into a timeout as the Golden Eagles inch closer but still are behind 13-12.
- Hubert Sliwinski grabs his own solo block to tie the set 14-14, followed by a double block from David Galanes and Hubert Sliwinski once again! Cornerstone take the lead 16-15.
- Patrick Voloch grabs two of his own kills late in the second set to build Cornerstone's lead to 18-15.
- Ernest Broaster, once again, puts Cornerstone within eyeshot of the end of the second set. The score is now 20-16.
- Andrew Galanes has a free attack to make the score 22-18 Cornerstone.
- The Golden Eagles take the second set 25-18, an identical score from the previous set.
Set 3
- Set three is off to a flying start, as a backrow kill from David Galanes gives Cornerstone the first point of the set 1-0.
- Two service errors in a row from both teams sees the Maple Leafs keep their lead 4-2 in the third set.
- A kill from the right-side for Goshen sees their lead advance, the score of set three is 9-5.
- A backrow, out-of-system kill from David Galanes begins to close the gap for Cornerstone, who still trail 9-7.
- Ernest Broaster tallies another quick kill to inch the Golden Eagles even closer. The Maple Leafs still lead set three 10-9.
- Some miscommunication from Goshen sees the third set tie up 13-13.
- David Galanes's kill off the block gives Cornerstone their first lead since the beginning of the set. Followed by a service ace from Ernest Broaster, the Golden Eagles up 14-11.
- The attack error by Goshen College gives Cornerstone the lead in a close third set. The Golden Eagles lead 17-16.
- Ernest Broaster rolls it over the block to give Cornerstone another lead 19-18.
- Andrew Galanes made it look easy to kill right around the block. The Golden Eagles grab a two-point lead 21-19 late in the third set.
- The backrow attack by Ernest Broaster and a block/tip over the net by Joshua Beaumont see the third set come to a close 25-19.
