Men's Volleyball celebrates senior night with a five-set victory

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles' senior day not only celebrates their four seniors but also a home court win against the Bethel University Pilots (7-9). #RV Cornerstone University (13-2) fought hard in the first set only to be taken down 26-24 by the Pilots. They regrouped in the second set, highlighted by four kills from sophomore opposite hitter Andrew Galanes, and won the set 25-19. The third and fourth sets were hard fought battles from both teams. The Golden Eagles took set three 25-17 with four kills from junior outside hitter Ernest Broaster and two service aces in a row from senior outside hitter David Galanes. The fourth set was all the Pilots, as they won the set 25-19. The fifth set was full of drama but was capped off by nine kills from Ernest Broaster that saw Cornerstone win the final set 17-15. Up next for the Golden Eagles, Cornerstone University will travel to the east side of Michigan to face off against the #RV Lawrence Tech Blue Devils who are 15-3 overall and 8-2 in conference play on Tuesday, March 26.

Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 3 Bethel – 2 (24-26, 25-19, 25-17, 19-25, 17-15)
Set 1
  • The first set begins with a kill from the Pilots to start the set off 1-0 Bethel.
  • Hubert Sliwinski gets the first kill for the Golden Eagles to tie the set 2-2.
  • A double block from Joshua Beaumont and Patrick Voloch gives Cornerstone the lead early on in the first set, followed by a kill off the block from Ernest Broaster to make it 6-4.
  • The dig from Senior Cade Meza gives a perfect opportunity to set Ernest Broaster backrow for a kill. The Golden Eagles lead 10-7.
  • A massive kill from David Galanes ties the set back up for Cornerstone 11-11.
  • A backrow attack from David Galanes and a tip over the block by Joshua Beaumont ties the set once again 15-15.
  • The block from Hubert Sliwinski, Patrick Voloch, and Ernest Broaster force the Pilots into their first timeout of the set, as Cornerstone take the lead 20-19.
  • The triple block stays up from Cornerstone, as they build their lead 23-21 late in the first set.
  • A couple errors from the Golden Eagles see the Pilots tie the set 24-24.
  • On a service ace from Bethel University, the Pilots win the set 26-24.
Set 2
  • The second set gets underway with an attack error by the Golden Eagles. Bethel goes up 1-0 early on in the second set.
  • Andrew Galanes flies back into the game with two kills of his own to tie the second set 4-4.
  • A service ace from David Galanes ties the set up once again for Cornerstone 7-7.
  • Patrick Voloch dumps the ball over the net to get a kill of his own and make the score 10-8 Cornerstone.
  • Two double contacts in a row from Bethel's setter see Cornerstone's lead extend to 14-10.
  • A tight to the net set is perfect for Andrew Galanes as he puts another kill away. The Golden Eagles lead the Pilots 16-12.
  • David Galanes takes advantage of the overpass to put the ball away and make the score 20-17 Cornerstone.
  • Landon Waltz puts himself on the board to extend the Golden Eagles' lead to 21-17.
  • The block from Landon Waltz and Joshua Beaumont closes out the second set as Cornerstone takes it 25-19.
Set 3
  • The third set is set in motion on a blocking error by the Golden Eagles. Bethel leads at the start 1-0.
  • Ernest Broaster opens up the points for Cornerstone with a kill to tie the set 1-1.
  • Two backrow attacks from Ernest Broaster ties the set up once again 4-4.
  • Joshua Beaumont with the kill off the block ties set three up for the fourth time this set 6-6.
  • A triple block from Ernest Broaster, Joshua Beaumont, and Andrew Galanes gives Cornerstone the lead 8-7.
  • A long rally is finished off by a backrow kill from David Galanes, maintaining a Cornerstone lead 20-15.
  • A dodge from Ernest Broaster sees Cornerstone reach the set point mark of the third. The Golden Eagles lead 24-16.
  • David Galanes ends the third set for Cornerstone with another kill! Cornerstone University win the third set 25-17.
Set 4
  • The start of the fourth set is marked by a 4-0 run from the Pilots, which is ended by a kill from Joshua Beaumont to make the score 4-1 Bethel.
  • David Galanes puts the overpass from Bethel away for the Golden Eagles who still trail 7-5.
  • A service ace from David Galanes inches Cornerstone ever closer to the Pilots who still lead in the fourth set 9-8.
  • Bethel University keeps the service aces coming to keep their lead commanding 12-9.
  • Hubert Sliwinski and David Galanes put up the block to stay within reach of the Bethel Pilots, the Pilots still lead set four 15-14.
  • A Pilot service error manages to keep the Golden Eagles in set four. Bethel still lead 22-17.
  • The tip over the block is what ends the fourth set, as the Bethel University Pilots take set four 25-19.
Set 5
  • The fifth and final set gets off the ground with a kill from Bethel's Andrin Broder, the score is 1-0 Bethel.
  • Ernest Broaster gets the ball rolling for Cornerstone in the fifth set to make the score 2-1 Bethel.
  • An opposite side kill from Bethel's Andre Parra sees teams switch sides in the final set. The Pilots lead 8-5.
  • Ernest Broaster tallies another kill on the night to put Cornerstone within reach of the Pilots. Bethel University still lead 9-8.
  • Ernest Broaster will another kill from the backrow ties set five 10-10.
  • A scramble from Cornerstone is enough to give them an opportunity to block the Bethel attack and take the lead 11-10.
  • Two attempts from the backrow in one rally from Ernest Broaster sees the Golden Eagles take the lead late in the final set 13-12.
  • David Galanes's kill gets the fans off their feet and put Cornerstone at match point 14-13.
  • The set is tied by a Bethel block from Tiago Silva and McGwire Eigenrauch. The score is 14-14.
  • Ernest Broaster gets a kill off of the block to put Cornerstone back up 15-14.
  • The set is tied again by Bethel on a kill through the block by the Pilots. The score is still tied 15-15.
  • Ernest Broaster rolls the ball over the block to put the Golden Eagles back up 16-15.
  • Patrick Voloch ends the match with a strong service ace, as the Golden Eagles win on home turf in the final set 17-15.

.500/10 – Joshua Beaumont was a dominant player on the night with 10 total kills on 18 total attempts to put himself at .500 hitting percentage in this five set thriller versus the Bethel Pilots.
