Tilma's 2-run HR helps Softball split on final day in Florida

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Sydney Tilma hit a 7th inning 2-run homerun in the opener as Cornerstone posted a split on the final day at the Space Coast Games in Florida. The win over College of Florida and the loss to Dordt end the week at 8-8 overall for the Golden Eagles as they will have their home opener on Friday against St. Francis (Ill.).
 


Game One Highlights – Cornerstone 7, New College of Florida 6
  • Cornerstone struck first with one run in the first and two in the second to take a 3-0 lead
  • Anna Griffioen led off the game with a single and was later brought home on an error by the Banyans
  • Griffioen then added a 2-RBI double in the second, scoring Sydney Tilma and Abbey Brower
  • The Banyans chased CU starter McKenna Gilde in the bottom of the 3rd when they posted a double, single and triple to cut the margin to 3-2
  • Tilma collected her second hit of the day to lead off the fourth but was stranded at second and then CU saw New College of FL tie it at 3-3 in the bottom half
  • After a leadoff single from Moriah Sprague to start the fifth, Alexis Ashbay hit her first collegiate homerun to up the lead back to two
  • The Banyans then scored one in the 5th and two in the 6th to take a 6-5 lead
  • Down to their last at-bat, the Golden Eagles got a leadoff single from Ashbay – who was then moved to 2nd on a sacrifice and to third on a wild pitch
  • A lineout to center kept her on third
  • Sydney Tilma then came up with two outs and connected on a deep blast to left field to put CU up by one
  • Alyssa Braam shut down the hitters in the 7th, 1-2-3, to give Cornerstone the win
 
Game Two Highlights – Cornerstone 2, Dordt 3
  • The Defenders got on the board first after an error and sacrifice fly scored the lone run of the inning
  • CU threatened in the second inning but a mishap on the basepath and a fly out ended a first/third with one out situation
  • Dordt added another unearned run in the third inning
  • Cornerstone got a double from Moriah Sprague in the 6th but she was left stranded at third
  • The Defenders then got a triple and single in their half of the 6th to go up 3-0
  • CU put on their rally caps in the 7th as Maddy Chatman tripled to lead off the inning and Taylor Zwagerman brought her home on a double.
  • Sydney Tilma stayed hot and doubled home Zwagerman to cut the margin to 3-2 but CU was unable to bring her home, falling by a single run
     
     
What's Next?
Cornerstone concludes their spring break trip with an overall record of 8-8. The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Friday and Saturday at home with doubleheaders against St. Francis and Judson.
