Softball falls in both games to Aquinas on heartbreaks, two walk offs

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – On Strike Out Cancer night, Aquinas and Cornerstone faced off for a WHAC doubleheader. Aquinas got the best of Cornerstone in game one, scoring late and on a walk off to win 2-1. Moriah Sprague scored the lone run with her solo homerun in the first. In game two, Cornerstone dominated all game thanks to another solo homerun from Moriah Sprague, but the Saints had the last laugh scoring three in the bottom of the seventh to sweep the Golden Eagles with their second walk off victory. Softball falls to 17-17 (5-7) on the year as they will host UM-Dearborn on Friday, April 12 starting at 3:30 p.m.
 
Game One Highlights – Aquinas – 2 Cornerstone -1
  • Moriah Sprague got the scoring started for the Golden Eagles with a solo homerun down the left field line to make it a 1-0 Cornerstone lead.
  • McKenna Gilde worked around a second and third one out jam in the bottom of the second to keep Cornerstone in the lead, 1-0.
  • McKenna Gilde continued to quiet the AQ bats through four scoreless innings.
  • Cornerstone had back-to-back singles in the top of the sixth but was not able to score another run as they continued to lead 1-0 heading into the bottom half of the sixth.
  • A two-out rally by the Saints sees them tie the game 1-1 heading into the final inning.
  • After a one out double, Aquinas would bring home the winning run on an RBI single into left field. Taking game one 2-1
 
Game Two Highlights – Aquinas – 3 Cornerstone - 2
  • Aquinas and Cornerstone is scoreless after two innings of play as Allie Lubben has kept the bats of the Saints quiet.
  • Just like game one, Moriah Sprague hits another homer run to give Cornerstone a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.
  • Allie Lubben worked around runners on second and third in the bottom of the fourth to maintain Cornerstone's 1-0 lead.
  • A double by Taylor Zwagerman and a single from Alexis Ashbay extended the Golden Eagle lead 2-0 in the top of the sixth.
  • Saints led off the bottom of the seventh reaching on an error and she would later score on a single to make it 2-1, still with nobody out. Aquinas would come through with a two RBI single to walk off game two, winning 3-2.
