GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After two tough losses to Aquinas a few days ago, Softball was right back in action with a double header against UM-Dearborn. Cornerstone beat the Wolverines in game one 7-2 thanks to a big five-run second inning.
Jolie Groeneveld drove in four runs to lead the offense. In game two, Cornerstone rallied in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to complete the sweep of UM-Dearborn, winning game two 9-1. Softball improves to 19-17 (7-7) on the year as they take on Concordia tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. as they celebrate their seniors for senior day.
Game One Highlights – Cornerstone – 7 UM-Dearborn - 2
- Moriah Sprague throws out the runner attempting to steal second as McKenna Gilde works a quick 1-2-3 top of the first inning.
- Michigan-Dearborn is the first to take advantage of the 20 MPH winds with a solo homerun to centerfield to take a 1-0 lead in the second.
- After a walk and back-to-back singles, the Golden Eagles had the bases loaded with one out. Jolie Groeneveld would come through with a bases clearing double to give CU a 3-1 lead. Moriah Sprague would follow that up with a triple, scoring two more to make it 5-1 after the end of the second inning.
- Jolie Groeneveld drove home another, this time in the bottom of the fourth with a single into left field to make it 6-1. Morgan Jenkins would bunt home another run to extend their lead 7-1.
- Michigan-Dearborn loaded the bases in the top of the fifth with one out as Allie Lubben would leave them loaded to maintain Cornerstones 7-1 lead.
- After a single and a few walks, the Golden Eagles had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the sixth. The Wolverines would get the next two on popups to send the game into the seventh inning.
- Dearborn would add one in the top of the seventh on another homerun, but the Golden Eagles would take game one 7-2.
Game Two Highlights – Cornerstone – 9 UM-Dearborn - 1
- The Golden Eagles stranded runners on second and third in the bottom of the first as the game is scoreless headed into the second.
- Mackenzie Nagelhout opened the third inning with a double off the left field fence. She would later score on a Morgan Jenkins bunt single to give Cornerstone a 1-0 lead. Dylan Holmes would bring home another on a sac fly to make it 2-0. Taylor Zwagerman drove in one more on a single up the middle as the Golden Eagles lead 3-0 headed into the fourth.
- Morgan Jenkins would drive in another run, this time a single into center field to make it 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Anna Griffioen would bring in a run with an RBI double to make it 5-0. A wild pitch and an RBI groundout later, the Golden Eagles lead 7-0 heading into the fifth inning.
- Michigan-Dearborn led off the inning with a triple and would later score on a single to make it 7-1 in the top if the fifth.
- Jolie Groeneveld continued her successful day at the plate, bringing home another Cornerstone run to make it 8-1. Morgan Jenkins would bring home the winning run with a double as the Golden Eagles take game two 9-1.
