GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Softball celebrated their three seniors in
Abbey Brower,
Jolie Groeneveld, and
Mackenzie Nagelhout and came away with a split against Concordia. Game one was a back-and-forth affair with the Golden Eagles scoring five in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead to eventually win 10-6. In game two, Concordia jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but a nine run sixth inning was the difference maker as they went on to take it 11-5. Cornerstone moves to 20-18 (8-8) on the year as they will take on Siena Heights on Monday, April 15 for a double header starting at 3:30 p.m.
Game One Highlights – Cornerstone – 10 Concordia - 6
- Jolie Groeneveld led off the bottom of the first with a single and would later score on a Moriah Sprague single into left field to take a 1-0 lead.
- After three straight singles with two outs to load the bases, Mckenna Gilde got the final batter on a fielder's choice to end the top of the second inning.
- Concordia scored in the top of the third thanks to a stolen base and an error to tie it 1-1.
- Moriah Sprague reached based on a fielder's choice and then would score on a Sydney Tilma double off the left field wall to retake the lead, 2-1. Delaney Wilson would follow with a single into right field to make it 3-1. The two out rally continued as Taylor Zwagerman drove in two more with a single as CU now leads 5-1.
- Concordia had a big inning in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs on multiple hits to make it a 5-4 game.
- Sydney Tilma leaves runners on second and third to maintain Cornerstones 5-4 lead in the fifth inning.
- After a CU pitching change, Concordia led off the sixth inning with a homerun over the left center fence to tie the game 5-5. Two batters later, Concordia took a 6-5 lead thanks to a double off the left center wall.
- Cornerstone had the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth with two outs as Morgan Jenkins would walk to tie the game 6-6. Moriah Sprague came through with the big hit, clearing the bases with a triple and later scoring on a wild pitch to extend Cornerstones lead 10-6.
- Alyssa Braam slams the door shut in game one, giving Cornerstone a 10-6 victory.
Game Two Highlights – Concordia – 11 Cornerstone - 5
- Concordia threw out the would-be run for the Golden Eagles at home to keep the game scoreless headed into the second inning.
- The Cardinals strike first in game two thanks to a single up the middle to make it 2-0 in the top of the third.
- Grace Paling works a quick 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fourth to keep the game 2-0.
- Taylor Zwagerman reached base on a one out single but that is all that is going for the bats of CU as Concordia continued to lead 2-0 after the fifth inning.
- The Cardinals extended their lead in the top of the sixth on a bunt to make it 3-0. The big hit of the inning was a grand slam homerun to center field to make it 8-0. Concordia blew the game wide open as they now lead 11-0.
- Anna Griffioen brought home the first CU run with a single up the middle to make it 11-1. Alayna Meade would follow that with a double scoring two, to make it 11-3. Taylor Zwagerman and Alexis Ashbay drove in another as the game is now 11-5 headed into the final inning.
- Concordia splits the double header with an 11-5 game two victory.
