Softball opens their road trip with a split against UNOH

LIMA, Ohio – A strong pitching performance by McKenna Gilde and a pair of runs from Jolie Groeneveld and Moriah Sprague saw Cornerstone to a victory in game one of this Midwest matchup 7-4 in seven innings. With just one team error all game, the Golden Eagles held the Racers of UNOH to just seven hits and four runs. Game two was a different story for the Racers as they were able to hold Cornerstone to just seven hits with three runs. UNOH took game two 8-3, splitting the away double-header for Cornerstone. The Golden Eagles will continue the road trip at Indiana Tech tomorrow as they face another WHAC double-header late in the season. The game will be played on the Warrior Athletic Field in Fort Wayne, Ind. at 1 p.m. EST.
 
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 7 UNOH – 4
  • Game one began with a quiet first inning, marked by great defense from both teams. The first three outs from UNOH all came off of fly balls, and a popped-up ball to second base.
  • The Racers began the scoring in game one, as a triple from UNOH's Hailee Edgell brought Eden Roberts home for UNOH. Hailee Edgell reached home on a sacrifice bunt to put the Racers up 2-0 in the bottom of the second.
  • Jolie Groeneveld scored the first run for Cornerstone as Moriah Sprague hit a double that gave her the opportunity to score. Followed by an Alexis Ashbay single that brought another run in for the Golden Eagles from Moriah Sprague.
  • Anna Griffioen and Delaney Wilson finished out the scoring of the third inning for Cornerstone, who lead 4-2.
  • Groeneveld, Sprague, and Ashbay all score in the top of the fourth inning to put the Golden Eagles up 7-2 runs midway through the contest.
  • Game one was marked by a Cornerstone pitching game by McKenna Gilde, who in the last five innings allowed just four hits. Cornerstone came out on top 7-4 with just one error all game.
 
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 3 UNOH – 8
  • The Golden Eagles begin game two with the first run, as Morgan Jenkins advances to home on an error by the Racer's shortstop.
  • The Racers hold the Golden Eagles for the next three innings to no hits and no errors, as Cornerstone grounds out a few times, and send a couple fly balls to the Racer infield and outfield.
  • The Racers score a couple runs to give themselves a four-run lead 5-1 in game two, in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • Zoe Johnson for the Racers makes the game 6-1 with a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth.
  • The bottom of the fifth was a UNOH show as they continued to score with a Hailee Edgell run, batted in by Payton Albright to make the score 7-1.
  • Taylor Zwagerman's double sends Anna Griffioen and Kaylee Misialek home in the top of the sixth inning to keep Cornerstone in game two, they still trail behind the Racers 7-3.
  • The final inning saw UNOH score one more run to make the score 8-3. UNOH held Cornerstone to just one hit in the top of the seventh, with a strike-out, a ground out, and a catch in left field. The Racers take game two 8-3.
 
By the Numbers
2-4/2 – Jolie Groeneveld and Moriah Sprague both went 2-4 in game one, having two runs each that helped see Cornerstone to the game one victory.
7/7/4 – McKenna Glides highlighted the Golden Eagle defense in game one. Pitching all seven innings, allowing only seven hits, and forcing four strike outs from Racer hitters.

Cornerstone will play a double-header at Indiana Tech tomorrow starting at 1 p.m. EST.
