(20)Madonna powers past Softball in the WHAC double header

LIVONIA, Mich. – Cornerstone Softball hits the road for a tough matchup against nationally ranked Madonna Crusaders. Madonna jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in game one, but Cornerstone would come all the way back to tie it in the top of the seventh 9-9 but would fall in game one on a walk off 10-9. In game two, Madonna used a big nine run third inning on their way to a 14-2 victory. Cornerstone falls to 14-14 (2-4) on the year as they remain on the road as they take on Cleary for a double header starting at 1 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
 
Game One Highlights - #20 Madonna – 10 Cornerstone – 9
  • Madonna opened the bottom of the first with a leadoff triple and would score two batters later on a single into right field to take a 1-0 lead. With two outs, The Crusaders would bring in another two runs on a double to make it 3-0 after the first.
  • Another big inning for Madonna sees another three runs score to take a 6-0 lead after the second inning.
  • A leadoff double leads to another run for Madonna as they now lead 7-0 after the third inning.
  • Moriah Sprague hits a solo homerun in the top of the fourth. That is Cornerstone's first hit and run of the game as they are now down 7-1.
  • Delaney Wilson brings home another run for CU in the top of the fifth with a double down the left field line to make it 7-2. Morgan Jenkins would add another with an RBI groundout to make it 7-3 after the top of the fifth.
  • Madonna would respond with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth to re-extend their lead 9-3.
  • With two outs in the top of the seventh, Morgan Jenkins singles into left field to bring home a runner to make it 9-4. A walk left the bases loaded for Jolie Groeneveld and she came through with an RBI single into right field, scoring two to make it 9-6. The two out rally continued as Moriah Sprague cleared the bases with her second homerun of the game to make it 9-9 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
  • Madonna would lead off the bottom of the seventh with a double and she would later score on an error by the Golden Eagles to take game one 10-9.
 
Game Two Highlights – (20) Madonna – 14 Cornerstone – 2
  • Jolie Groeneveld doubled with one out in the top of the first and would later score on an error buy the Crusaders to give Cornerstone a 1-0 lead.
  • Madonna had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the first. Three singles by the Crusaders gave them a 4-1 lead over Cornerstone after the first inning.
  • An error by the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the second allows Madonna to score another run as they now lead 5-1.
  • Moriah Sprague drove home another run for Cornerstone with a double into left Center to make it 5-2 in the third.
  • Madonna scored right away in the bottom of the third two batters into the inning thanks to a double to make it 6-2. The hits kept coming for Madonna as they have blown the game wide open as they now lead 10-2. It was all Madonna in the third, as a nine spot has them leading 14-2 after the third inning.
  • Taylor Zwagerman would single in the top of the fifth, but the Crusaders would shut down the bats of the Golden Eagles on their way to a 14-2 game two victory.

4 – Moriah Sprague totaled four hits, with two homeruns to lead the Golden Eagles offense

Cornerstone remains on the road as they face off against Cleary for a double header starting at 1 PM tomorrow afternoon.
