Gortmaker and a Goshen own goal helps Women's Soccer to a season opening 2-1 victory

GOSHEN, Ind. – Women's Soccer traveled to Goshen to open their 2024 season and came away with a 2-1 victory, giving first year head coach Sam Tracey her first career victory. Cornerstone came out aggressive, scoring in the first four minutes thanks to a goal from Gracie Gortmaker and continued to put the pressure on the Maple Leafs all match. Cornerstone would add another goal to their lead thanks to an own goal by Goshen that proved to be the difference maker in the match as Goshen would add a score late. Morgan Scholten recorded four saves in goal to lead the Golden Eagles in the victory. Cornerstone returns home for their home opener on Tuesday, August 27 as they face off against Grace Christian at 7 p.m.

First Half:
  • The first opportunity of the game for either side belonged to Cornerstone as Gracie Gortmaker put a shot on goal and scored to give the Golden Eagles their first goal of the season four minutes into the match. 1-0 Cornerstone.
  • Goshen had an opportunity in the eighth minute but resulted in a save by Cornerstone keeper Morgan Scholten.
  • Shots from Tori Woodwyk and Alaina Kregel in the 11th and 12th minute were off the mark as the Golden Eagles had another opportunity to score.
  • Another shot on goal by the Maple Leafs was saved by Morgan Scholten. This one in the 14th minute.
  • A shot on goal by Tori Woodwyk resulted in a save and corner kick for the Golden Eagles. Three straight shot attempts by the Golden Eagles were blocked as Goshen escapes a dangerous situation in the 27th minute.
  • Cornerstone heads into halftime leading Goshen 1-0.
 
Second Half:
  • Goshen had the first opportunity in the second half as their shot on goal hits the crossbar as the Golden Eagles escape.
  • Cornerstone had a corner kick in the 51st minute but the header from Tori Woodwyk sails high away from the goal.
  • A cross pass from Gracie Gortmaker intended for Alaina Kregel finds the body of a Goshen defender and into the goal for an own goal in the 56th minute to give Cornerstone a 2-0 advantage.
  • Goshen rushed straight down the pitch with a shot attempt that was saved yet again by the Golden Eagle keeper Morgan Scholten.
  • The shot by Brooke Harmsen hits the crossbar as Tori Woodwyk follows that up with a shot that sails high over the goal in the 60th minute.
  • The Golden Eagles continued to stay aggressive as three more shots in the 73rd minute miss as it remains a 2-0 match.
  • Goshen started to get a little chippy as two straight yellow cards by the Maple Leafs resulted in a red and ejection from the game in the 84th minute.
  • A foul right outside the box resulted in a Goshen free kick that found the back of the net right passed the outstretch hand of the Cornerstone keeper to make it 2-1 in the 87th minute.
  • Cornerstone would instantly rush down the pitch and draw a foul right outside the box for their own free kick but was saved by the Goshen keeper in the 88th minute.
  • The Golden Eagles played keep away and came away with a 2-1 opening night victory.
 
By the Numbers:
8 – Cornerstone had eight corner opportunities, while Goshen had zero.
4 – Morgan Scholten a game high four saves.
2 – Goshen scored two goals for the match, with one counting towards Cornerstone's tally.
1 – Gracie Gortmaker scored the first goal of the year for the Golden Eagles.
